Strength training only for weight loss?

I meet with my personal trainer 3 times per week (1hr each) for strength training and we do what he refers to as super sets with minimal breaks in between. I find it really exhausting and cannot get motivated to fit in additional cardio...so my question is, is this a realistic way to lose weight, without cardio? Is the weight loss much slower this way? I feel stronger and healtheir and have likely lost some inches (we haven't done an assessment in quite some time) but there really isn't any drastic movement on the scale. Your experience and advice is appreciated.

Cardio can help for aerobic conditioning and it can help create a large calorie deficit so you can eat more. The latter can be done just by eating less. I think that prioritizing weight training over cardio is going to help you if your goal is fat loss. (NOT saying cardio isn't beneficial or that people shouldn't do it if that is how they love exercising.)

Weightloss come from a calorie deficit, nothing else. You could do marshmellow presses, and bathroom sprints.. as long as you have a deficit, you will lose weight.

I think you have a very good trainer.

I vote super sets are actually the BEST way to lose weight and improve fitness overall. Don't worry about not squeezing in additional cardio, super-setting is actually done in part to elevate your heart rate more rapidly and constantly.

I'm kind of a cardio addict, I with I had the cahones to do more strength training! Keep it up!

I like that. If you just want to lose weight, it is probably 80 or 90% what you eat, not how you exercise. However; muscle burns more calories while you are doing nothing than fat does; so some muscle is good.

You are 35, and if you are lucky you might have 5 years or so before your metabolism takes a nose dive and will be increasingly more difficult to lose weight. What you need to decide is how healthy do you want to be at 45 - 50 - 60 and and beyond. Doing 3 30-45 minute cardio sessions a week is healthy. If you add a weight circuit - even one to that, you will maintain muscle which will help keep you from joint injury and the aches and pains of getting older. The super sets build tone, not mass, and in some sense are cardio. Wear a heart monitor t check this. I run at about 135 doing super sets. Running on the treadmill, I get up to 170 or so.

The scale is not specifically the goal, but a BMI that is "normal" for your height and weight.

Here is what happened to me.

    Good luck.

I've always heard that to see results in the muscle tone that you are most likely building you have to do cardio along with strength training. Even if you only do like a 10 mintue jog I'm sure that would be plenty since it sounds like you are kicking butt! But if you are seeing results without cardio maybe just stick to what you are doing! Everyone has different things that work for them :)

dang I agree, not being able to move after you are done *cheers to ur trainer :) You can lose weight from strength trng and the better news is that you actually burn more after your are done because your muscles are on recovery mode (plus you burn calories just to maintain the muscle) If possible try to fit cardio 2-3 times the days you are not lifting.
