Is it possible to lose weight and gain inches?

I'm just wondering because I can't tell if I'm just paranoid because I haven't been tracking while I'm away at college (I'm trying to maintain for now until I get back home) or not. I haven't been working out nearly as much as I did over the summer, but I walk everywhere and I watch what I eat. I've lost about a pound and a half since away at school and my clothes still fit okay, but sometimes I feel like I could be putting on weight on my thighs or stomach, and that makes me nervous. Sometimes, I let the thought of weight gain and weight loss consume me, so it's possible that I'm paranoid... but is this something to worry about?

Scientifically speaking, I suppose it's POSSIBLE to lose weight and gain inches, as in losing muscle and gaining fat, but that's something that would happen over a fairly long period of time. It's unlikely, but still possible, as muscle weighs more than fat. HOWEVER.... I doubt that's the case here, considering you watch what you eat AND you walk everywhere. It might just be you being paranoid, especially if the whole weight loss/gain situation consumes you. As long as you continue to watch what you eat and walk as much as you can, I doubt there's anything you should worry about. When you say you "watch what you eat", I gather you don't necessarily LOG what you eat, you're just conscious about what you put in your mouth, which is great... however, if the whole weight loss/gain thing worries you, I would encourage you to keep a log/diary about your food intake, that way you KNOW what you're eating and how much you're eating, and you can keep yourself accountable for everything. That way you'll know whether or not you're eating too much or too little. Seeing it all on paper and knowing it's true might assist in keeping your paranoia at bay.
Hope this helps.

To answer the opening question, I guess it is possible to lose weight and gain inches of muscle, but really, it's unlikely. The more muscle you gain, the more you'll end up weighing (usually) because muscle is heavy! But the thing is, it doesn't really matter what you weigh, because you'll look so toned and fit with that muscle Don't stress about it sweetheart! Just keep living healthy and you're fine0

I'm going to say no.
You said you haven't been working out as much, and chances are you didn't just magically gain muscle from walking. Not too sure if you ever focused on weight training when you were exercising, but it sounds to me like you're losing muscle (therefore, losing weight and gaining inches).
Or, none of that could be true and you really are just paranoid:)0
