How fast is too fast?

I am sure there is probably another board about this somewhere else but I am going to ask anyway...

How fast is too fast in terms of weight loss? I have a lot to lose and realise I will lose more in the beginning but just wondering what is healthy?

Started at 135.7kg (299.2lbs)
Currently at 132.7kg (292.5lbs)

...after only 7days. Too fast?

For me - the most weight I lost in 7 days was 3 lbs. I think a few people consider 1.5 to 2 lbs. to be considered a healthy weight loss in a week. If you lost 7 in 7 days then more power to ya! :) I think it depends on your body and as long as you're getting the proper nutrition then you should be okay. The quote I always go by though is "Slow and Steady wins the race."

Did you create a 3,500 kcal deficit each day? If not, it isn't fat loss. Most likely water and feces.

I was around your size when I got started and I lost about 20 lbs in the first month. As you change your diet, your body will react by shedding a lot of excess fluid, so that is likely the reason for the rapid weight loss. As long as you are eating healthfully and not running more than a 1000-calorie deficit, you shouldn't need to worry about losing too quickly. I have averaged about 2.5 lbs a week for 7 months. Some would call that too fast, but it has been with reasonable diet and exercise, and my body seems to appreciate it, so I would say it isn't anything to worry about unless it is extreme.

The larger you are the faster it will come off. When I was at my biggest (160kg) I lost about 10kg in 2 weeks.. I know some of it was water weight, but it did come off fairly rapidly after I started creating a deficit

Unless instructed by a doctor, only cut 20% down from maintenance calories. The main reason is the heart! The secondary reason is to give your body time to adapt to the weight loss.
Find your maintenance calories and BMR. Stick to 20% down from maint. When you stall out you have to do the math all over again.
    =D
    Good luck!

I was slightly bigger than you when I started (137.5) but I lost a simillar number the first week. It's not uncommon at that size because we are a lot bigger and have more to lose. It will slow down.

I've lost 22kg in 130 days and I've had people here tell me it's too fast. As long as you're eating healthy (at LEAST 1400 cals) and exercising then you're fine.

I just went back and looked, I can't figure out how to look for the first week, but in the first two I lost 7kg :) It's 'slowed down' now but your body will regulate it somewhat too.

in the first week i lost 8lbs and have continually losing every week. im down about 30lbs now!
  • i've lost as much as 10lbs in one day, off of exercise alone. but most of that is water weight... depending on what your muscle density is, how much you are working out, and WHAT you are eating (not necessarily just calorie count) will depend on how fast you lose weight. 1-3lbs of fat per week is considered to be healthy, unless you're doing HCG (Simeons Protocol) but that's a whole other debate.

keep up the good work and make sure that you are eating a variety of nutrient dense foods in conjunction to a restricted calorie count every day! if you're doing low carbs, high protein like i am, you might want to supplement your nutrition with vitamins and what not.

    good luck :)

Thanks everyone! I am eating more now that I am counting calories than when I wasn't. Guess I am just making healthier choices.

Its all a learning process, just don't ever kick yourself for mistakes. Work it out say ahhh I know that now and do it different the next time. The number of mistakes I've made lol I couldnt count, including letting my brother drag me to a resturant last night when all I wanted was a hot bath.
  • Hi there,

Good effort and good first lost. See how you go this next week and you will probably find it will slow down a bit. I lost a bit my first week.
Just make sure you are eating enough!
