Can I do this without a gym?

I need advice...my gym is $60 a month and I have not been consistently going. I think I have not been going due to the gym being another "thing" on my list everyday and I feel bad paying the money when I'm not committed. I can cancel my membership without penalty at this point. My question is, has anyone had good or better results without a gym? I do have a Precor elliptical at home. As I type this, I am seeing my own commitment is an issue....but would you drop the gym to save money? Thanks in advance for any input!

  • I don't use a gym. I tried to for a while but it just seemed like an extra expense and the time it took to get there, get home, coordinate showering, etc...was too much of a hassle. I use a treadmill at home, do yoga at home, use DVD's, and run and walk outside. It works for me.

I have lost 50+ pounds since February without a gym membership. I have a treadmill at home that I try to use several times a week. Also, I swim in the summer and ride my bike when weather permits. All you have to do is modify your calorie intake to match your workouts. You CAN do this without a gym!! Good luck!

I don't know if my results are better at home because that's all that I have done. A while ago someone posted on here that it's in our best interests to do things that are sustainable which includes finding ways to lose weight/stay fit that don't require "something" to attain our goals. Meaning there might be a point in our lives where times are tough and we can't afford the gym or something else that could prevent us from going to the gym. If you can get yourself into running or walking or something else you can do at home and lose/maintain weight that way, then you'll always have it! Does that make sense!? I am down over 40 pounds since last Christmas just by running or doing workout DVD's two to three times per week.

You can do most anything you put your mind to. Most people consider reasons they cant instead of what they can...

gyms are totally not needed to reach your goals, but can be helpful if you are training for something like a triathlon where you need a pool. You can run, use your elliptical, and do calisthenic (using the weight of your body as resistance) exercises to help with strength.

I have not joined a gym and as of this week have lost 45 lbs (joined late January 2011). Yes, it can be done but you must be willing to walk, exercise, etc. at home. Weight will come off without exercise but the more muscle you build as you lose weight, your metabolism increases (more muscle=faster metabolism).

I do plan to up my exercise now that I am at a weight that lets me ENJOY exercise more. Don't lose sight of your goals, this is meant to be a healthy weight loss tool!

It sounds like you wouldn't go regardless of whether you did/didn't have a membership. That wasn't supposed to sound mean - I know I wouldn't go, and I know of at least 3 friends who have had memberships and never went. I'm pretty sure they regretted not cancelling their membership.

You can definitely do this without a gym. I have made it this far and the only exercise I do is walk around my neighbourhood every now and then.

You might want to join the gym again later when you've already reached your target goal and want to tone up, though :)

i lost 29 pounds with out a gym membership. if money is an issue, and you don't go anyway, cancel it. you can do so much with what you already have.

Thank you for all the responses...and yes, it is an added expense that even the guilt of spending the money doesn't get me there any more often. Thanks for the support!

You have to discover what is best for you. If you are not using the gym as much then you can cancel it since you have an elliptical machine at home. There are other alternatives for weight training like resistance bands & other at-home strength training routines. It depends on what works best for you.

I can't afford a gym, but I have several work out DVD's and also the Wii workout games, and I have lost 38 pounds just doing that.

I now do all my working out either at home or running outdoors near my home. I invested in some good equipment to mimic my favorites from the gym, but I don't have to go anywhere to use it and with the savings in membership fees it will pay for itself. On the other hand, there are things I miss about the gym. Namely the squash court and saunas.

I refuse to pay that much for a gym membership. Right now I have been using my ancient stationary bike + free weights + a set of steps + bodyweight stuff and bicycling weather permitting. On demand has free workouts so I have yet to buy a dvd. I could afford a gym membership but until I think I want to start heavy lifting or using the treadmill I won't bother.

    I'm currently throwing away $46 a month for a gym membership I don't use.

I'm doing the C25K program (no gym needed, just a road) and the 30DS (again, no gym) just my living room floor, my TV and DVD player.

A gym doesn't necessarily ensure success.

btw, i forgot to include my mantra "this is 80% nutrition, 20% exercise." so yes, you can experience weight loss with just eating right and having a caloric deficit.

oh, my other mantra is "that which gets measured, gets improved."

I have a gym membership, but I hardly ever use it. It is out of the way and just not convenient for me. However, I've taken up walking and attend zumba classes regularly. I also do exercise dvds at home and play exercise games on my Wii game system. And, I do have a heart rate monitor, which I like to wear while out running errands and doing shopping since I am exerting myself and burning calories. This way, I am able to count this as exercise too. So, I said all that to say Yes, you can do this without a gym membership. The key is to do what works for you, and what you will be able to incorporate into your lifestyle.

I find it easier to stick to a work out plan if I don't have a membership. I always had an excuse why I can't drive to the gym. Now I use a fitness video that has several programs. If I don't have much time, I throw in the 20 express workout. 20 minutes is better than nothing. I try to do the 45-60 minute workouts most of the time. I can answer questions for my kids, listen for them in the bath or whatever I need to do if I am at home. I also save time by not having to drive anywhere.

I don't use a gym. I do my workouts at home either doing DVD workouts like Tae-Bo and the like, or doing body weight workouts, or cycling. There is no need for a gym.

    Bella,

It does sound like your commitment is the issue more than the gym. I would cancel it just to save the money. You need to find something that you can commit to and do. If it's walking, biking, doing videos, you need to find it for yourself. I don't go to a gym. I use the Turbo Jam series and I have lost 25 lbs in 2 months. I have done it all in my own home. Good luck finding your motivation and with your weight loss journey!

You own a PRECOR ELLIPTICAL? If I owned one of those, I would give up my gym membership in a second

I love my gym membership I make it a point to be there for my favorite classes, I have friends there and its my me time. It gets me away from the stresses of home, work, and other things. I can just turn on the music and go all in. No distractions like laundry needing to be done if I was at home, or cooking, or anything. But, I can afford it and I do use it. Before I had my commitment issue to the gym I wasted money on it and said I will go tomorrow. I never did.

But you can do it at home easily. Its a lifestyle change, its making a choice to live healthy. Not a choice to go to the gym or not. Eat better. This is at least 85% nutrition.
  • You can do it without gym--I cannot afford a gym that would have classes I enjoy doing. (I am not a big fan of the treadmill) I invested some money in a good dvd workout program, which saved me money in the long run.

I just recently bought a recumbent exercise bike and I do my exercise at home. For me, I am more apt to exercise with something right in my house versus driving to a gym. It surprises me that I am as diciplined as I am about getting on my bike. I just feel so proud of myself that I have done it. I use it at least 6 days a week!

You have one of the better elliptical machines, I would not even waste my time with a gym when you can get a good work out right at home. Good luck with you choice! Feel free to friend me - you can never get/give too much encouragement!

I love my gym membership, but I also went through that period last year where I was paying for months and hadn't gone even once. It's definitely a motivation issue, and I finally cancelled my membership. It took me another 8 months to decide to start over, and I haven't stopped yet. For some people, exercise DVDs keep them motivated or running/biking outside. I hate DVD workouts with a passion, so they don't work for me. I now have Wii Fit and even though I do that most mornings, I still go to the gym later in the day. There is no point in wasting your money and feeling guilty over something you already know you're not doing and/or aren't going to do right now. Find what you will do and do it consistently.

You do not need the gym to lose weight, just like people do not need to eat fast food, Xbox,PS3, ipad, iphone, cable, and a smart phone. Its all depends on what you want to accomplish and how the goals you set align with your mission. Whatever works for you or does not work for you as long as you stay active is the key to reaching your goals

    Easily!

I cancelled my gym membership a few years ago because I kept losing weight without actually going. I like being outdoors more (even in -20 degrees celcius) than running on a treadmill. You can do so much without a gym membership (and if you want to go gung ho -- you can get a few videos or weights and be good to go).

I do buy a swim pass that ends up being around $10 a month, but I use it.

I've lost 25 lbs since Aug 11th and haven't set foot in a gym. I use Chalean Extreme DVDs and dumbbells for strength training. For cardio, I walk, use Chalean and Tae Bo DVDs, and hop on the old HealthRider and Gazelle equipment that used to only hold laundry.
