I am a strict vegetarian and mostly vegan and have a big sweet tooth. What is a typical day of meals and snacks for you and how much sugar do you consume? I'm trying to get my sugar consumption down, what are some low sugar snacks and breakfast ideas that you like? So far for snacks that are low sugar I have almonds and cucumbers and bellpeppers or carrots with with it. You'd be suprised how much sugar I have.

I am struggling with the same thing.

I am lacto/ovo transition (again) to a vegan diet.

I snack on almonds, fruit, roasted chickpeas, crackers, etc. But, I want to limit refined carbs, too.

I've found that the longer I've been vegan, the less I crave sweets. I do bake some vegan goodies nearly every weekend, but the amount that I consume personally is probably less than 20% of what I used to consume as an omnivore. (Yes, I had a GIGANTIC sweet tooth before.)
  • Eating more protein will help tame your sweet tooth. many vegans tend to eat a large amount of carbs which only makes you crave sweets more. When I was vegetarian I used to make a big pot of lentils w/ homemade low sugar BBQ sauce and snack on them when I craved sweets.

I am reading "Crazy Sexy Diet" now, which advocates a low-glycemic vegan diet (which is what I need and have a hard time doing). It's a fascinating book.

I do not label myself a vegan or vegetarian but I eat a plant-based diet. A typical day of meals for me consists of whole-grain cereal (I have been eating Ezekiel cereal as of late, but wheat berries and oatmeal are also staples) with unsweetened almond milk and fruit. For lunch and dinner I will often have a soup or curry made of lentils or beans and vegetables(broccoli, sweet potatoes. cauliflower, mushrooms, etc.). Sometimes accompanied by basmati rice. Or sometimes for dinner I have a large salad with greens, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, broccoli(pretty much any veg I can find in the fridge), chickpeas and avocado. I do sometimes eat eggs or fish with rice and veg. But I know you will likely not be doing that.
I was a junk-food vegan for a few years and I thought it was so unhealthy. I will likely cut out the animal products again when I feel ready. I snack on fruit(apples mostly) or small bites of cheese. I rarely consume refined carbohydrates or sugars; they are a rare treat. I do not worry about the sugar from whole foods but I likely consume an average of 40g of sugar per day. Where is most of your sugar coming from?

Yeah, I wish my sweet tooth had gone down over time. I've been vegetarian/vegan for almost 5 years and my sweet tooth hasn't changed. I think I inherited that from my mother :/ I just don't know what else to have as a snack other than fruit or almonds or luna bars....
