Avast and AVG antivirus programs work fine, but you should couple it with some free spyware protection like MalwareBytes.

    Update and scan them regularly.

I use Avast too, just make sure to permanently turn on "Silent Mode" when you get it.

Otherwise your entire lecture class may learn your virus definition database is updated...:blushing:

    Avast!!

Also keep an eye out for spyware and malware... altogether, I use Avast, Windows Defender, and Malware Bytes. I believe all of them were free.

    I use AVG
  • I personnaly think that Avira AntiVir Personal (anti-virus), MalwareByte's (anti-malware) and SpyBot (anti-spyware) is a decent combination. My computer is extremely happy with that, and rarely suffers from intruders

I used to have Avast, but in my opinion it's not as efficient as Avira, and it uses a bunch of memory :grumble:

LOL this is true... since I stopped trying to download seasons of TV shows for free, I haven't had a single virus problem. I do keep Avast just in case, though.
  • My friend is a nerd and upon reading the word "Norton" is now on a eight minute rant about how you pay for their antivirus and they generate viruses that are harmless but frightening just to keep you paying...

    and he's still ranting...

This doesn't work for me! Even with the (free) antivirus program I have, my computer get viruses now and then. I guess this is how a virgin with STDs might feel like...

I use Norton. It used to suck really bad, but now they've made it a lot better.

Not free, but there are lots of free after rebate offers for it. I think it's worth it to do rebates for. Mine came free with my cable internet, Comcast.

I used to use AVG but changed when I bought my new laptop a few months ago. I now use Trend Micro, not free but it gives me the best protection..

I use WOT (Web of Trust), a free extension in Firefox, that helps detect bad sites. That isn't foolproof though, of course. I basically go on the same sites when I use the laptop like this site.

I use the WOT add-on as well. Very handy.

As for Norton, one for 3PC can be had for under $30 from Amazon or Ebay, if you don't want to deal with the rebate hassle. But right now, Staples, Office Depot, Frys, Newegg, etc... has it for free after rebate throughout the year along with Trend Micro Internet Security. Staples rebate is fairly easy. You don't have to mail anything in. Just fill out your receipt and address info, then the check will come in the mail or paypal.

Oh yeah, good advice. I LOVE CCleaner. I ran it just once on a laptop from 2001 and it ran 10 times faster immediately.

The only thing that would make Avast any better is if the voice that tells you about updates was a pirate's voice "Avast! ye virus definitions have been updated matey!"

Seriously avast + malwarebytes + spybot and I rarely see a problem on my computer or my parents!
  • I have used a variety, but now I'm on my Chrome book.

But check out this site: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-anti-virus-software.htm

They research and rate all free applications. They basically do the work for you and tell you what you need to know. Great site and I highly recommend if.

They rank Avast! Free Antivirus has the highest.
