Can I do this without a gym?

A gym is definitely not needed. I lost 16 pounds without one. I used my treadmill until it broke; it was really old. Now, I run in the park, do Jillian Michaels' DVDs and work in squats and lunges throughout the day.0

Are there any cheap gyms in your area? I pay $10 a month for a gym with weight and cardio machines only b/c I know I will go nuts w/o a gym but know I won't use all the extras in a nice gym. I supplement this gym with various classes around town.0

Of course you can reach your goals without a gym. BUT, I wouldn’t recommend it. Go, join the classes, mix it up, make live friends, get motivated and inspired.0

Honestly, I am more likely to work out at home than I am at a gym. I like it that I don't need to pack up any workout clothes. They are all right here, and so is my shower. I am still not consistent, but I'd rather get in a 10 minute workout at home when I don't have much time than skip it all together. I used to skip going to work out because I didn't want to drive somewhere, find a locker and then find an empty machine. It's so much easier to just pick up and do whatever I'm going to do here and not worry about month to month expenses.0

Of course, you don't need the gym and please consider it as a luxury. The money you spend on the membership is money you can spend for workout clothes, DVDs, weights, and healthy food. I started my journey with walking, running stairs, and jumping rope. It wasn't until I started wanting more of a workout that I started going to the gym however you have an elliptical at home, which is my main reason for going. As long as you're working, it doesn't matter where you are.0

Of course it can be done!!!! You asked can YOU do this and that is entirely up to you. I work out at home to workout DVD's and I also walk on my breaks at work. 49 lbs later and I am still pushing:bigsmile:0

If I had a Precor elliptical at home, I'd definitely drop my gym membership, as that is bascially the only thing I use at the gym. I've also found that MFP's calorie calculation is finely-tuned enough that if you stay under your calorie total without any exercise you will still consistently lose weight (I know, because a knee injury kept me from exercising for over 2 months). However, for your overall health and longevity you still need to exercise. Get some good DVDs from Netflix and fire up that elliptical from the comfort of you own home.
Good luck!0 -
I don't use a gym. I have lost 25 pounds this year, not going full force all year lol took a few months off, by jogging, biking, and doing workout dvds. For the price you pay for a gym membership you could get netflix and have a ton of videos available on demand, or buy a dvd or two a month so you can get variations.0

I've got an 8 1/2 month old son so a gym is not the best option for me. (The Y is the only one with Childcare and is more $ than I want to pay). So, we go on walks together, or I work out in the house while he naps. We've got a Wii, some weights, and I rent exercise DVDs from the library to vary everything up.
Yes, it can be done, you just have to dedicate yourself to it! Just as much for a gym as at home.0 -
ive never used a gym, ive always just watched calories, got out and walked when possible, i love my wii fit i actully have lost 50lbs in the past and never used a gym, YOU CAN DO IT!!0

I have such a busy schedule I know I would not use a gym membership either. I have a treadmill at home and I try to walk at least 5 days a week. I will also put Just Dance 2 in the Wii and do that as well for a fun excercise with my kids. You can definitely do this without spending the extra money on a gym membership!!0

I had a high-end gym/tennis club membership for 4 yrs (paid for by my co.) and never went. I bought a piece of exercise equip I enjoyed (a rowing machine) and some other home exercise equip (ex ball, kettlebells, resistance bands, etc.). I drop in on a class or workout with a friend at the gym now and then, but for the most part I workout at home.
You have to find what works for you. If you aren't going to find time to go to the gym, but you will work out at home, investing in home equipment is totally worth it IMO. You can also rent equipment to see if you'll like it... renting my rower would have been around $45/mo. (half the cost of my gym membership that I never used... LOL!)0
