Sudden 5lb gain...then lost?

For about 3 weeks I was eating healthy and exercising about 5x a week. I started at 150lbs and got down to 146. And then the last 10 days happened, in which I worked out maybe twice, and ate very unhealthfully. I was convinced that I blew it and would be starting from scratch, as far as losing pounds goes. I weighed myself last Friday and was up to 149. I weighed myself the last two days, and I was 150 again. Yesterday was my first day getting back on track in terms of eating my caloric limit, and I did a nice 30 minute walk.

Today I got on the scale and am sincerely shocked to see that the scale reads 145 pounds. I'm certainly not complaining. But can anyone explain to me how this is possible? How can my weight be 149-150 for several days, and then drop like that? I haven't been working out or eating healthfully, wouldn't this show on the scale more longterm? Or am I getting away easy and picking up where I left off before the weight gain? Haha, sounds too good to be true.

You gained then lost water weight. Most likely not fat or muscle.

Ah water weight, the bane of any dieters scale weight. It has caused many a dieter and scale to break-up. Seriously I once saw a you tube video from a lady who took a baseball bat to her scale, it was great!

When you went back to eating unhealthy you probably ate a ton of sodium and drank limited water. As you got back into the swing of things and paid more attention to what you were eating all that fluid retention went down the drain. That is going to happen, many times on your journey.

    Don't fret, and good luck.

could have been high sodium intake that caused water retention and then you released it!
  • Yeah, I was figuring it must have been water weight to come and go that fast. But I'm also wondering, why is it I can eat 2000-3000+ calories for so many days and not gain more serious weight?
