Weightlifting = no calorie burnt?

Hey guys,
Just wondering how I set up a 'strength exercise' that burns calories... I do a pretty intense workout, covered w/sweat by the end so I think it should count for something. Also it would make sense to have some wiggle room for high protein foods that day...
thanks!

    I think you have to enter it into cardio if you want it to show calories burned

    Enter it under Cardio - Strength training (weight lifting, weight training). That'll show calories burned.
  • If you search "strength training" or "weights" under cardiovascular exercise, you can still enter how many minutes you did it and it will show calories burned.
    Also, know that sweating is your body's temperature control, not an indication of calorie burn. If you're sweating a lot during your workouts, make sure you drink 1 pint of water for every 1 pound of water weight you lose during the workout (weigh yourself in the buff before and after your workout to calculate your water weight loss. This is NOT permanent weight loss, it needs to be replaced in your body). Also, if you are performing endurance sports, try using a sodium supplement (in marathons they just hand out salt packets), this will help your body retain the water your body needs for exercise and temperature control.

    Don't be discouraged by the low level of calories burned by weightlifting (although make sure you incorporate some cardio for weight loss). Lean muscle burns calories faster and more efficiently, so the more weight training you do, the more calories you'll actually burn during cardio activities.

    Try entering it under Circuit Training or Calisthenics in the Cardiovascular option. You get a bigger burn under those categories. I do a kettlebells class but I know I burn more than the 100 some calories that show up under weight lifting.

    There's really no simple and accurate way to determine calories burned with intense workouts. It's probably best to just guestimate it's the same as a cardio exercise of the same time (include your rest time). While you might burn slightly less calories during the actual workout, intense resistance training will increase your metabolism more than endurance cardio.

    I'd be careful about supplementing with sodium. While salt pills may be a good idea for running a marathon in the summer, they can lead to hypernatremia if used inappropriately.
  • Hey great guys - thanks!
    I really think I'm burning at most 400 cal for the 1 hr workout (had calculated this at some point, using the best 'information' I could find online) - what category matches that the best?
    Also, I am doing cardio, alternating days w/lifting. However, there is no way I burn the 900 calories that show up when I enter the workout... is there any way to tweak this? I know I could always just list a slower speed/decrease time, but I wanted to track it as accurately as possible to gauge my (eventual) improvement.
    Also, really appreciated the tips on building lean muscle to promote increased metabolism long-term. Not using salt tabs but taking in at least a liter of water during the workout; will save the gatorade for the marathon.
    Thanks again and best of luck everyone!
