My doctor gave me this website today that was created by another doctor at my university that explains some of the physiological reasons that we become overweight. It also shares some tips based on the newest research findings that can help you lose weight, or at least some things to keep in mind. Before reading this, I would have never considered getting enough sleep as being such a vital part to losing weight. Lots of fascinating things.

y'know .. interesting. I have chronic insomnia. I haven't slept in decades. I'm gonna blame my weight on that, yeah.

I"m doomed! I wake up around 3 every morning and can't go back to sleep. I'm always tired! And my grandkids get in my bed in the middle of the night and that doesn't help either.

Yeah, something I should have added...it is full of lots of scientific terminology, strange words, and long-winded paragraphs...but still, quite helpful! :)

When I gain a pound or two I spend 2 nights that week sleeping 12 hours and I drop the weight. Most people can't do that and most people woulden't anyway but it works for me.:smokin:

Thanks for sharing - that looks really interesting. I like to read about the "science" behind things - when it's written in layman's terms. ;)

I just totally had an AHA moment!! And I didn't even read the article!!lol! I don't sleep for a full week before my period (I've heard it's hormonal) and guess when I binge eat and go crazy trying to stop the binge eating?! You guessed it--->the week before my period... and PMS doesn't help!!!

Going to read the article now....

... and now having read the article, I realize how little I do sleep... wow.

It reads like a doctor wrote it... interesting, can see the logic behind it, but some of it just wouldn't fit my life. Still, it's good food for thought. Thanks for the link.

I guess that I have an excuse then. Three small kids...no sleep. Not! I'm not giving up that easy :) Nice to know though and focus on getting to bed at the earliest opportunity. It's hard 'cause I really want that "me" time after they go to bed.

Whole lot of nonsense on that site.

wait you mean skipping breakfast isn't the #1 risk factor to become obese and that there is no need to engage in resistance exercises because everyone but the elderly already has adequate muscle mass?

I guess they don't know the difference between association and causation. Does skipping breakfast make you overweight or are overweight individuals more likely not to eat breakfast? (This is a very important difference)

    I agree...a bunch of nonsense

Not sure how reliable this is.... they used the wrong form of the word "affect" in one of the titles of the pages.

I think the body strives for homostasis and thats why its so hard to loose weight, we are genetically programmed to prepare for times of famine and store fat for survival. THe body is an amazing machine, so many variables at play its impossible to approach from one school of thought rather, find what works for you and keep at it..no simple easy fix, allot of hard work, motivation, dscipline and accountability involved for success...just my .02

Interesting little site, of course it's six years old, so it's certainly not using the "latest research." A lot of outdated information, but some common sense stuff as well.

I would highly recommend The Beck Diet Solution (How to think like a thin person) book for the pyschological issues with weight loss/gain.

Actually, quite a lot of it is accurate. You're just not used to seeing this information associated with obesity. Most people don't know about interleukins or CRP or much about leptin/grehlin. Keep in mind that the exercise information is in relation to people who are morbidly obese and CAN'T undergo resistance training. People our age truly AREN'T experiencing sarcopenia while the elderly are. Most often the true science will look pretty foreign if it's not put into laymen's terms.

So after reading a lot more through this site, I did notice that it is like 6 years old, so not new like my doctor had implied. Also, I noticed the wrong usage of the word 'your'...but nevertheless, it still has some useful info.
