Logging a Gain or Loss Over & Over & Over Again

I'm just going to put it out there. I have been hovering at 129.6-133 lbs since July and it's Dec now ~ 5 months. Every week is the same. I log a loss (YAY!) then a gain (NO!) over and over like a broken record. I'm probably one of the most positive pals on here, but really though . . . how long will this last? Patience is really wearing thin. Anyone broke a 5+ month plateau?

I havent' broken through, but I am stuck at a 5 month plateau. I am choosing to work on body fat percentage and building running endurance rather than the scale for now, but I want to see what the responses are to this post.0

I have but got stuck again. I would "search" plateau and see if that gives you any tips. I decided to work on toning and that will change the numbers back and forth for me, but I look way slimmer when it all starts to pull in. LOL. I would see if a different workout routine will "shock" your body some and get you some more results.0

How long of clean eating have you gone? I know if i eat clean for a few days and then eat bad for a day or two...the weight goes up...so I flunctuate...I find that if I consistently eat good for a couple of weeks, no cheat...I lose pass what I was. weight loss is mostly eating...and no matter how hard I workout, if my eating is bad...I won't lose and I'll gain.0

Have you tried upping your cals ? Or changing up exercize routines?0

wow that is rough especially since you are close to your goal. Have you ( and I am thinking 5 months in you might have) tried to figure out what was causing it. I had a months long one that was due to not enough water. Some people play with clas intake in order to push their system into moving. I hope you work it out!! Good luck0

Mee ! Well, barely. It took me about 4 months before I started losing again. I upped my protein and changed some of the things I eat (because I'm a person who attaches to routine when something goes right). I also changed up my exercise by doing new workouts instead of the same old jogging & gym. I don't do any one workout more than once or twice a week, so I keep my body challenged.
Hope that kinda sorta helps. :}0 -
Fluid retention plays a big role in my weight going up and down! Drink your water and watch your diary. I get stuck sometimes for weeks at a time but if I keep up the water and my diary, then I will lose! I know that it didn't take me a few months to put this weight on and I will not lose it in a few months!0

Have you been tracking your measurements? The scale is not the be-all, end-all of getting fit. Your measurements could be going down. Do your clothes fit looser? These are things to watch for. I'm personally MUCH happier when my measurements go down than when my weight drops. :bigsmile:0

Thank you for all the tips. I have been on MFP for almost a year you would think I know every advisable thing by now. I have been working on cleaning my eating which can be a challenge with the festivities among us and the weekends. I have tried every change up workout routine imaginable. I also take measurements about once a month and very slight changes. Needless to say being so close has been very difficult to stay motivated.0

It really comes down to diet and being consistent. It only takes one bad day to throw a weeks worth of exercise and clean eating off. I think the saying that abs are made in the kitchen is so true. Hope you figure out! I know you can do it!0

How close are you to either your BMI or Goal weight? I tend to note when people fall within 10 pounds of either, the fluctuating of weight back and forth in a range tends to happen. I've been floating between 184 and 190 for the last few months myself.
I've plateaued before. Two things got me through: 1. Paying EXTREMEMLY close attention to calorie intake and documentation and 2. Completely revamping my training so that I was doing something entirely new. In my case, I joined a boot camp class (I typically don't do any kind of "group" anything--zumba, P90x, etc.). Well, it "shocked" my body back into losing weight again because it didn't know how to adjust to my new exercise approach.
Also, your "progress" (depending on how you define it) may now have to be measured by inches lost and body fat percentage than by weight. Despite my plateauing in weight, I'm better toned/defined and have less body fat than I did even last month, but I weigh about the same.
I'm also lining up another boot camp to "bring me through the calorie intensive holidays."
Hope some of this helps.

Shawn,
Thank you for the tips on how your overcame your plateau. I have considered ways to change up my routine (weekly), but a trainer or boot camp will probably get me out of my comfort zone. Right now I'm working on heavy lifting and have my husband show me but right now we only coordinate once a week. I know I would not push myself with weights without him. Boot camp is definitely a great idea to get me pumped again.
My BMI is 23.4 right now so I'm in my healthy range for my height 5' 3". Tightening up my eating is quite a struggle for me on the weekends and social occasions. I do measure progress w/ inches loss (I haven't been losing as quickly as I did before) and body fat percentage (which I have to get an update on that).
