i quit smoking and scared

I quit smoking this week (figured if I am going to lose weight miht as well give up this habit too since it benefits my health as well and do this all at one time) I am on day number 4 with this I heard even if I control what I eat I can still put on pounds just from the stress of this Does anyone know If that is true I am scared by this. I worked so hard to lose the nine pounds I did lose and I dont want them back.

when you quit smoking it is possible to gain weight
nictotine can stimulate your metabolism and when you remove the noctine there can be a temporary slowing of the metabolism ..it is temporary while your body adjusts
also if you replace the cig with food then you can gain weight
slowly slowly increase your cardio as your body adjusts
the benefits of quitting far outweigh even a significant weight gain
stress of quitting can also do it so you need to think positive about what you are doing
accept that as you detox from the nicotine that you are going to be uncomfortable and by accepting that you can deal with it better0 -

"Smoking impacts many endocrine glands- your pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, testicles, ovaries- in addition to your lungs, heart brain, and oh yeah every other cell in your body. Smoking helps cause insulin resistance and diabetes, drives up your cortisol levels and gives you a fat stomach. Smoking can make you infertile and throw your body into menopause year before your time. Smoking is also a huge risk factor in developing problems with your thyroid and can lead to hypothyroidism because of the increases in levels of thiocyanate a known goitrogen (a substance that causes goiters). If you're already hypothryroid, smoking cuts your thyroid secretion even further.
Even with all we know about smoking, I stil have twent-year-olds who come to me smoking like chimneys saying " I can't quit-I dont want to get fat!" (In fact a survery of four thousand women in Self magazine found that 13% of women smoke to lose weight.)
I have bad news for you- smoking will make you fat. And old. And ugy. Oh, and maybe dead. That's hardly a sustainable beauty regimen.
Do we really have to go over this? For the last time, people quit smokiong. Just because some starlet is shown chain-smoking her heart out at a sidewalk cafe doesn't mean that's the secret to her weight loss plan. Smoking fills your body with many pollutants that not only won't help yyou lose weight, they will make you fat.
Just don't do it!"
As a former smoker I understand your worries, but the health benefits of quitting are so numerous and the definately outweigh the possible problem of gaining a few pounds>
If smoking was an oral fix replace it with chewing on gum or sugar free suckers. It is hard to quit! We're here for you because it is so important to your health.

I can promise it is worth it. I quit smoking 5 months ago and yes I gained about 8 pounds but the benefits of not smoking are worth every pound gained. I tried dieting at the same time I quit and it was too stressful. Don't worry about the few pounds, just keep exercising and eventually you will lose what you gained. I just kept up the exercise and stared healthy eating after I truly kicked the cigarette habit. I'm now below my smoking weight. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!0

Thank you all for your help I am really putting all my effort into it this time this is my third and last attempt to quit last because I am so sure that I am going to do it this time. I am not giving in no matter how bad the pain is0

Hi Tracy,
I just want to say I am going through the same thing. With the support of everyone here on MFP I quit smoking last week. One of the reasons I quit is because it did seem somewhat hypocritical to be living and preachng (to friends and family) about a healthy active lifestyle while I still smoked.
I haven't weighed myself this week in fear of having gained (I had a brownie episode over the weekend :laugh: ) However I know it will be worth it and I can always lose whatever I gain. In fact as my breathing improves I will be able to increase the intensity of my workouts and hopefully lose weight faster.

i quit a little over 2 yrs ago and the difference in the HR monitor when exercising is something else. i thought i was doing good just burning 200/300 calories in an HOUR. now i burn that in 15/20 mins. and can get that heart rate up sky high with no ill effects. also sleep is soooo nice now. i just saw the price of a pack at the store yesterday and about died. $5.00 a pack for off brand. no way.

Even though it has only been a few days I have already noticed that I am sleeping better. Now if only I didn't have to commute 1.5 hrs to work and could sleep in :laugh:0 -
Good for you I quit aswell about a week ago and I'm going strong! I feel like I almost forgot about smoking. Anyway it's possible for you to gain a little bit of weight but not that much. Only due to the fact that you need something else to do with your hands and mouth, Try sugar free gum! Don't worry though if your on a steady diet and meeting your goals everyday with your will power you will be fine Think positive and don't look back0

I quit 7 weeks ago yesterday and I am SOOO thankful. I did gain some weight but I went to the doc last week and he said usually after 6-8 weeks of not smoking anything you did gain will come off fairly easily with exercise and of course watching what you eat. Go for it!!! You've got nothing to lose by quitting and everything to gain.
It only takes three weeks to make or break a habit.
And most important thing I held on to
"The urge to smoke is going to go away whether you smoke or not so why bother smoking?"0
