On the back of the horse thread... I wanted to add a scenario

The world is in a bad economic state but we've all got to eat.. haven't we?

So.. what about if the world leaders made a decision that our ancestors were right, and we should add Human to the consumption menu? So instead of locking people up in jail, they are put to death - without lethal drugs and they're 'carcus' used.

It occured to me last night after reading the horse thread, and watching a programme on cultural beliefs and relgious practices of the past - how they ate human organs, ground up brain and drank blood sometimes literally from corpses.. I wonder if anyone would eat Human if it was made legal? Royalty ate ground up skull because they believed a traumatic death lead the soul to jump' into the skull. European countries have photgraphic records showing people drinking blood after a person was killed by removing the head.

Well... what is the difference between our souls and other animals? Why is it morally wrong to eat human? But not animals?

I'm pretty sure I never saw a cow, sheep, horse, ostrich or such ever eat each other.. yet we insist on eating everying we can lay our hands on.. and kill.

Fancy a bite?

  • It would be hard to convince society as it stands, whereas some cultures still practice cannibalism. If there was no other source of food then I would imagine that even a vegetarian would eat another human lol.

There was another similar proposal that said if everyone ate one child then we'd solve overpopulation... obviously it wasn't implemented yet the logic is fine.

My point is, it doesn't matter how logically correct something is, humans don't work that way... if we did we'd all be like Spock or whatever his name was lol
  • Also humans aren't really evolved carnivores anyway... we're not really omnivores either. We're herbivores that have adapted to eat meat. Omnivores share the killing characteristics with Carnivores and are able to hunt down and kill prey using their own body, we need tools to perform the same task. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE meat, love love love, but I'm just making a point. If you give a human a knife, a lamb and a source of fruit and vegetables then you'll find that many can't stomach killing the lamb and will just go vegge lol; however, take away the lamb and add in a vaccuum packed lamb chops ration and away we go.

Truth is humans aren't really geared up for killing... some of us are perfectly capable of it but it's an acquired taste, certainly not natural. If you've ever seen a cat play with a mouse before it kills it then you'll know the difference lol.

I guess the idea of eating something that you interact with every day is an acquired taste too and it would take a certain type of person to be able to kill and prepare a human for cooking... let alone eat one
  • Pigs eat each other and so do chimpanzees.

Chickens will eat their own eggs too lol
  • My husband (who grew up on a farm) says chickens will also eat one another, not just the eggs :p

I'm pretty sure if there was no other food source we would all turn canabilistic. But the point I was trying to raise was if ethics are balanced in our minds - i.e. a humane kill, would we eat anything we were told was 'ok' to eat.

Lets face it governments are often motivated by money and places like chernobel (sorry can't spell it) and more recently Japan prove that when they have little choice they'll let us eat food known to be contaminated.

I just think sometimes we as humans are like sheep.. we follow a leader and don't think about it.

The point about killing a sheep v's eating pre-killed and prepared meat is very very true. I have (as a veggie) humanely killed a chicken - I kept for eggs. But she was dying and it was solely to stop her suffering. I did not eat her carcus or use it for anything. But having taken that life I can't say it was nice ubt it was necessary. I do believe we as humans are animalistic but try to supress within societal boundaries. So perhaps in time these will change and we will see human 'meat' being consumed. I hope I never see the day there are no vegetables.
