I want to a) congratulate EVERYONE who has done amazing with their losses!
I'm ending my journey.
I've been wanting to lose weight since I was 14.
I just turned 19 this week..
Sadly, I can't stick to any healthy eating, or excersize.
No matter how hard I try.
So Im staying on here to keep congratulating people, but will no longer be trying myself.
I just find im getting too upset by being unable to maintain a loss that im more depressed then I was.
I'm ending my journey.

Don't give up. Just change your motive to being healthy. Don't worry about weight loss right now. Just try eating healthy by starting with small things like eating smaller portions, or getting 8 glasses of water every day, or eating an apple every day. Start small. And for exercise find something you enjoy doing and do it because it's fun. Or just walk for ten minutes everyday or walk in place while watching your favourite show. Don't do it for weight loss, do it for your health.
I'm 19 as well and finding it really hard to lose weight (mine is because of PCOS) and partly because I just can't buckle down enough to be super strict (example...I know going low carb has been really successful for other ladies with PCOS but I just can't give up my carbs) so instead I"m just focusing on eating healthy (but not depriving myself of what I want) and exercising.0 -
I completely understand where you are coming from, however throwing in the towel isn't the answer either. I often feel like I have been on this journey for way too long, but quitting is going to get me nowhere. Soooo, each day I start again. Succeed or fail, every day is a new day. Please don't give up!! Hang in there! And if you need help, by all means, ask! No one knows what you need if you don't clue them in. Ultimately it's up to you, but I believe you can do it... it just may take longer than you like.0

I think that for the reasons you listed on your profile you need to stick with it, never mind the reality that you are shortening your life by being so unhealthy at such a young age. It might be easy to give up now but you will regret it when you become a Mother or even when you are looking for a partner. I would suggest changing the dates on your goals and starting over. What great things are you giving up on yourself for. The things in your inspirations for losing weight sound like fantastic Goals, can you even list 4 things that you will gain from going back to an unhealthy lifestyle that even compare to those 4 reasons for staying?
I'm not having a go at you, I've been you. Now I'm on a path to fitness which I wish I'd started years ago. There is damage to my body and my mind caused by carrying too much excess weight over the years and some of it will never heal but I owe it to my kids to do this. You owe it to yourself. First off, we all know your not giving up. Why? Because you said it in a public forum. It was easier than saying "I need some help". That's cool, I get it. Like other people have said, forget about losing weight. THROW OUR THE SCALES!! Make weekly or monthy goals such as "I will drink 8 glasses of water a day for a week", when you can achieve that 7 days straight (a full week), continue with that, but add a new challenge. Such as eat an apple a day for a week, or walk for 10mins a day for a week. Then maybe no fast food, you get the idea. Baby steps and it won't seem so bad!!0

Generally you don't stick to things because you make up excuses to not do them anymore. You need to tell yourself "No excuses". You really have no excuse to get healthier. And it seems like you are taking things a bit too big instead of thinking smaller.
Stop thinking about farther out goals. Take it day by day. It's how I quit smoking (and continue to stay quit). Think "Today I will eat healthy" or "Today I will exercise". You need to be conscious of what you are doing. You need to tell yourself that what you are doing is bad. It will eventually become habit to do the healthier things.
Don't wait as long as I have. Habits get harder to break the longer you do them. Let me tell you, I am bi-polar (I get WEEEEEKS of not wanting to do anything) and PCOS (which makes it harder to lose weight). I have lost an average of 3 lbs a week since I started (5 lbs lost during Thanksgiving week ALONE). Trust me when I say that it is very possible. I have been fighting with myself about my weight for 10+ years. Stop wanting to be skinny and start wanting to be healthy. It really does change the entire way you look at weight loss.0 -
You can do this. Just take it one day at a time.
you didn't put all the weight on in just one day. It's not going to take one day to get rid of it all. So break it up.

As you get older it gets harder in some ways. You have so much fun to be had in your life and alot of life to live yet. If you dont do something now...you will regret it later on for sure! I know it seems hard, but it really isnt. Its just one day at a time, one lb at a time. Dont look at it as one big number to loose, cut it down to make it more managable. Do not give up on yourself. Friend me if you like. I have ALOT to loose and feel the same as you at times, but look around you, so many people can do it. If they can, you can!0

Well, take it slowly.
Keep your account on this website, and exercise when you want, eat properly when you want.
Problem is most people think they can change everything in one day: "I am a new person", but it does not work like that. Someone who'd start running should not to start running a marathon.
Yes, weight loss takes it toll on our bodies and minds, so we need to take it slowly, in manageable chunks.
What this means is keep logging your cals on here, even if it is just once a year (!) it is an improvement, and also I ask you: please don't forget to fail to be under your calorie goal sometimes, or even better sometimes don't even log them. Who cares anyway?
You're not doing this for anyone but you, so you've got to do it at your pace.

Keep going, you can do it if you focus on goals and reasons why you are eating what you do. I find the more I exercise the more enjoyable it becomes. I just stared this week, and have the challenge of being pre-diabetic, I have to lose 15kg for my health and if I don't I know I will most likely get diabetes.
I have lost weight in the past and then about 5 yrs later put it all back on! I know exactly how you must feel about it ! but it can be done ! also sugar and carbs can be addictive, if you cut down on these foods, have low GI, only do about 20 mins walking or 30 mins or so , you will definately lose weight. Just try a little step at a time.
Sometimes we don''t realise what we are capable of until we try.
something to ask yourself is what is stopping you? is it time? is it emotional issues you need to deal with before you can lose weight? is it environment temptations? I know for example that I just can't purchase chocolate or icecream as I dont seem to have any self control with those two foods !
I was feeling exactly like you this time last year, but that kind of feeling can pass, sometimes it takes time before we can gear up to make a change happen.
Hoping very much you keep working on it, healthy eating and exercise is so essential for good health, and preventing health problems in the future.

Don't give up now. Everyone can if they actually try. Its mostly mental. I've battled my weight my whole life..and So far this year I've dropped 47lbs. I rather eat healthy and exercise, then to be fat.0

You know giving up is the easy way out, to keep going is the survivor's way out. Focus on being happy and living a long life, don't focus on loosing weight, that will be your reward because you're a survivor. Also check out this one diet that is a lifestyle change/diet it really help me focus on living and I was rewarded with significant weight loss that stays off. I totally agree this is not easy. I had weight loss surgery and I still struggle. Anything worth having is going to be hard work. It is your choice to give up but where will that get you. True success is never giving up.0

Really? You are going to log in here and congratulate others, but not try for you? You are content to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else succeed at what you want for yourself?? No way.
You are still young enough that your body can burn calories at a quick rate. You gotta do this now. It will be a lot harder as you get older.
You admitted that the problem is your self control. If you want it bad enough, you will go get it. You will walk away from this computer screen and start throwing junk food away from your kitchen. Then put on your sneakers, walk out the door and take a long walk. Go. Now.0 -
I understand the struggle. I think probably everyone here does. It's not easy or none of us would be overweight to begin with. I have no advice in terms of motivating you. Maybe the best thing is to walk away for a bit and come back when you are ready.
Personally, two things made a tremendous difference in my weight loss:
First, I started logging calories thruthfully. At first, it's shocking at how easy it is to go over. I just logged them and shrugged it off. Gradually, I started thinking more about what I was eating and making choices that are better (not perfect). I'm still working on it.
Second, I got a trainer. he pushes me to limits I hadn't known I could reach. I love working out. I was previously one of those fat but (kinda) fit people. I was always biking and going to the gym but clearly I wasn't working to my potential because there were minimal changes.
Anyway, again, if you aren't ready, then you aren't ready. But, I will say, that I am now 37 and really wish I had gotten this together when I was your age. I missed out a lot on dating, where fun sexy clothes and other stuff many of my friends were doing. I spent a lot of years letting my insecurities (i.e. fat) get the best of me.

Picture me with my hands on my hips hovering over you like a Drill Sgt does a soldier ... You will NOT give up!!! You are ONLY 19 years old. You have your WHOLE LIFE ahead of you. What you eat is a CHOICE. Your attitude is a CHOICE. Buck up girlie and GET WITH THE PROGRAM!!
Now ... take a deep breath ... know that a lot of people here care about you and want to see you succeed in being a healthy young woman growing into a healthy older woman. I am an older gal. When they say that weight is a factor in diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, etc., they are not just talking to hear themselves talk. It is real and these are important things to avoid. Please, please DO NOT give up. Get whatever help and support you need. Walk everyday! Avoid sweets and starches ... I know, easier said than done.
What did it for me was nutritionist in my radiation oncologist's office. Yes, I was diagnosed with breast cancer ... had the surgery, chemo (OMG!!) and radiation. She told me that I had to lose as much weight as I could and still be healthy to be able to say that I have done everything I can to keep the cancer from returning.
I do not want you to have to face that kind of situation. I want you happy. I want you healthy. I want to know you are growing into your later years happy with the decisions that you are making now.
So, eat more whole grains ... eat less sugar ... eat at least one good salad a day ... stay within the calories that mfp recommends ... and not just the calories, but the protein, carbs, sugars, etc. Remember, those are recommendations. If you go over or under, it is not a big deal. Just get as close as you can. I stick to the calories and make good choices with my foods and the rest just seems to fall roughly where it should.
Be experimental ... for example ... I just love ranch dressing, but hate the fat free ranch. I love Tostitos type salsa. I mix two tablespoons of salsa with two tablespoons of fat free ranch and I have a dressing very low in calories that I really enjoy. Then I have calories enough for another part of my day.
Drink the eight glasses of water every day! It really, really does matter. It is a huge assist in weight loss.
I could go on and on ... I wish you the best and hope that you are going to stick with mfp and find the success and happiness you deserve.0 -
Wow!!! I want to thank everyone in this thread for your tough-love posts . I'm just a month into my own journey and what I read from y'all was VERY motivating. It touched me and kept what I'm doing in perspective. I took it to heart. Hence my post.
As brilliant as your posts are, I don't think it would help someone like the OP who seems to have given up before ever really trying. But hey, who knows. Stranger things have happened.0
