I think this is the right place to post this question...

Just wanted to know if anyone has ever breastfed while pregnant. Is there health issues with doing so? What about calorie intake? (Bf burns anywhere from 300-500 calories a day). Just want to get all the info I can!

Thanks!

Not sure I can give you any number help, but I was nursing my 2nd while pregnant with my 3rd. My dr told me to wean the 1 yr old a month before the next one was born. She was shocked that I was still nursing. One nice thing about nursing the first while pregnant, didn't have to start all over with sore nipples. :blushing:

I could eat all I wanted and it didn't cause a problem. Of course at the time I was also doing all the animal chores on our farm, hauling feed, water, etc. Guess it would have been hard to overeat with all I was doing.

Anyway, it is possible. Both kids are grown and doing great.

If this is something you're planning on, it's important to know that you can't plan. Breastfeeding reduces fertility, and pregnancy can dry up your milk supply or make your milk's taste less appealing to your baby. You have to roll with whatever happens.

    Thank you!

With my other kiddos they where weaned well before I became pregnant again. I am hoping to wean my 10m old about 1yr. However I would prefer she weans herself. How my other kiddos did it, and it was better imo. But I may be pregnant and I wanted to be sure I am not harming either baby.

I only have one child...so obviously didn't breastfeed while pregnant, but I regularly attended La Leche League meetings and a number of women were doing so without issue. LLL website has a whole host of information.

Medical issues are not well-documented and vary widely on an individual level. The nipple stimulation from breastfeeding can cause uterine contractions which is a risk for women with a history/at risk of preterm labor. Additionally, your milk may change flavor and your baby may go on a nursing strike. Some women experience fluctuations in supply which can make it difficult to meeting the milk demands of an infant so you'll want to watch weight gain...especially in a baby that isn't eating other foods.

I'd talk to your midwife or OB about any extra vitamins they feel you may need during this time as pregnancy and breastfeeding can take a toll.

    Good luck!

Thank you! I never though of checking out LLL. I feel dumb lol! I am just worried that my calorie intake will be too low. I also have had 2 miscarriages before my daughter and so am nervous about doing anything that might cause potential danger to a baby. I am not even sure I am pregnant...but there is a possibility and so I just trying to get a heads up. If I am preggers I will definitely make an app with my OB and discuss this all with him. Thank you again
