i am out for dinner and drinks tonight and i know i will be way over my limit... how can you log some of these items when some restaurants don't have the nutritional facts listed? how do you know how many calories, carbs and fat is in it then, to log it? just wondering what some of you do in these situations?

work out today, and create a nice big calorie deficit. eat normally throughout the day. when you go out, chose a nice healthy, balanced main course, and maybe a salad as an appetizer, and maybe skip dessert, unless its something awesome.

one bad meal will not ruin all the work you've done. listen to your body, and your stomach.
  • First, I try to stick to just a few types of foods, so it's easier to recall what I ate. For example, I don't eat a piece of everyone's appetizer. And, I think my portions can stay smaller, since I kind of get tired of eating a limited array of foods and stop eating. Take a look at your food before you start eating and mentally note the size of the portion.

Then you have to be OK with never knowing EXACTLY how much you ate and what the calories were. Accept it and do your best. I just try to find foods similar to what I ate from a well-known chain that are already in the database and log them. Last night I went to a local restaurant and had fried pickles. They were lot like the Texas Roadhouse ones so I just logged that.

If it's a salad or something simple (say pasta with a tomato sauce), then I just break it down by ingredient - so I'll guess about how much pasta and sauce I ate, do a generic search for pasta and sauce and then just add that. If it's something more complicated or with a lot of sides, I'll just search for the sides and main course and add something that seems reasonable. Otherwise, I usually just add about 800 for dinner (after it gets fried and all) and then 150 per alcoholic drink.

Don't worry about being too accurate. Just get something close. Enjoy yourself and have fun - it's not worth freaking out about calories!

thx everyone. we don't get out often for dinner and are not appetizer people but i do like to have a few long islands :) we are heading to moxies and i love their beef dip sandwich, which is what i am having.. i went to see if there was one logged on here and there was one from boston pizza and WOW like 1500 calories or something, i couldn't believe it! so needless to say this evening will be a total right off and back to scratch tomorrow :)
