What's a good HRM?

I'm sure this question has been asked before (I tried doing a search but that gave me way too many pages to sift through), but can anyone suggest a good HRM that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I don't know a lot about them (lol, except that I want one). Is a watch as good as one that gets strapped on to your body (do they make ones that strap on to your body)?

You can't go wrong with the polar brand. I have the F6 model and it does everything I need it to do. You will find that your Calories burnt are going to be different than what the machines at the gym say. This is usually a good thing:smile:

    I love my polar F11.
  • I have a polar and a Nike HRM. I didn't have any problems with either except my watch strap broke on the polar. Also the polar is compatible with most equipment.

OK so I didn't go with the Polar, but I love my Timex Ironman HRM.

I paid $99 for it at Sports Authority. It has a belt that you wear, plus the watch. I press start when I start my workout and stop after my cooldown and it gives me a breakdown of my workout - total time, minimum heart rate, peak heart rate and calories burned.

I think I looked at the features on the back of the box with Polar and Timex and the timex seemed to give you more features for less - that's why I chose it and I LOVE it- i just wish that it was a little girlier :O) . But I hear nothing but good things about Polar.

Hi annaliza, I use the Reebok Precision XT. It comes with the chest strap and watch. It works very well, and doesn't cost $$$$. I paid $29.99, no tax, free shipping at buy.com (about 6 weeks ago). It does everything the expensive ones do except drain your wallet.

Ohh, thanks everybody!! I sure appreciate it.

I'm going to check into the polar and reebok (my husband is a HUGE Nike fan so I'm sure that's the one he'll end up getting).

I never even thought about a HRM until I came here. I soon realized how I could screw myself up by not truely knowing how many calories I burned....especially with my wii fit. I was kind of guessing it so I could be putting myself in starvation mode and not even know it!

Are there HRM that doesn't use the chest strap? I mean a HRM that gets the HR from the wrist on the watch itself. I'm just curious. I'm using a Timex one now. Works pretty well.

yes, but from what i understand the chest strap kinds are more accurate.

I have the SportLine 925 Womens Heart Rate Watch that I got from Target for around $70. I LOVE it, as I had tried a chest strap before, and with the kickboxing, turbo jam and other DVDs that I'm constantly jumping around with, I found it wasn't very comfortable. I think my HRM is really accurate. I've compared it to checking my HR manually and it matches up perfectly. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to get my heart rate to register, but once it does, I don't check it again until further into the workout...I'm just trying to get an idea of how many cals I burn, not an exact down to the minute. Works for me!

I just bought one yesterday that did not require a chest strap. I didn't want the chest strap and 1 more thing I have to fiddle with. I've never used one and started thinking all these crazy things like what if the strap gets sweaty & falls down and doesn't read right. just HOW adjustable is the strap since we come in all different sizes, how does the strap get washed or does it get washed? LOL

Anyways I went to Sportsauthority yesterday and bought one made by Sportline, it's for women and is the 910 model. It was $59.99 and I paid an extra $10 for a 15 month warranty. If the baterry goes dead they replace it with a whole new watch, not just the battery.

Instead of the strap, it has a touch sensor on the watch you press and it picks up the pulses in your finger tip and can read the heart rate and calories burned. It's pretty cool.
