Skinny Fat

Hi. I have a smaller frame and am short (5'2") so I am concerned about becoming "skinny fat" - or least what I think it is which is when someone is small, but has no muscle definition. What can I do to combat this?

I'm trying to figure that out myself... I've lost a ton of weight and still have no real "definition" except for in my legs from running... I think that's where strength training/weights come in... but I'm too afraid to try it!0

Get weights. Lift weights. Repeat.
Seriously, lots of threads on resistance training. It will keep you from being skinny fat and do lots of other wonderful things for you besides.0 -
Adequate protein intake, a slight deficit (no more then 20% of tdee) and heavy resistance training0

Get up and move. Mix it up to use different muscle groups. Repeat again and again. The muscle definition will come.0

I'm in the same boat, weights seem to be helping me.
Good luck and persevere.0 -
This is where good strength training and protein makes a real difference. "Skinny fat" is a recipe for disaster. At that point you are in a hole, it's tough to build muscle, and your metabolism is usually messed up.
I talk to so many people who just want to focus on losing weight, and tell me "they don't care" if they lose muscle. It's the fascination with the scale. They are afraid that lifting weights and having protein will mkae them lose less weight.
I'd like to tell them if the scale is all they care about, I will just sell them my old scale since it's about 10lbs off in the right direction. Just buy my scale, and you will lose 10lbs immediately!0 -
I recommend trying some workout tapes from www.collagevideo.com that are for strength building. Jari Love has a great muscle building series that will give you great definition if you keep it up. Muscle burns more calories too, so it will help keep it off.0

YOU will love once you start, I'm serious, it's amazing how addicting weight lifting can be. challenging and fun0 -
Thanks all!
I am currently doing the 30DS for my weight training and cardio. I am going to pick up some 5lb weights tomorrow - been working with 2lbs. Any tips on what strength exercises I could do at home with hand weights for someone with REALLY bad knees?
Thanks again!0 -
For really bad knees always do the modifier if there isn't never bend as low as the people in the video only go half way. If there is jumping don't do it just do it standing straight and never have your knees over your toes. I think that's everything. Oh nope if it hurts STOP IMMEDIATELY!!!!0

Strength training. Basic dumbells for bicep curls & triceps. You can use machines for your legs or resort to good old squats, lunges, step ups, etc. That will build & define your muscles.0
