With all the temptation and goodies out this time of year, what are some good tips to avoid weight gain?

Keep it to a few days off track, rather than an entire "season"

I continue to log and eat well the entire week, but I will indulge a bit more on the specific days of celebration. In the past it hasn't hurt my weight loss efforts. Don't let the holidays cause you to go entirely off track all month long.

I'll be kicking up the exercise. Fill up on healthy first.

When food is just left out somewhere--even at a party-- I sip sip sip [water, decaf tea, maybe a diet soda] so I have something in my hand and in my mouth and won't hit the food.

When someone offers me a cookie, snack, treat, directly, I smile genuinely, and say "Oh, thank you! That looks so good that I may have to try one of those a bit later!" and then don't.

There are many things you can do to avoid weight gain during the holidays.

    1. Plan ahead if you are going to a party. Make sure you eat prior to the party.

    2. Exercise, Exercise and Exercise!!!!

    3. If you would like a dessert limited yourself to one serving but make sure you can offset that with EXERCISE!!!

    4. Stay away form mixed drinks and eggnog!! There are to many empty calories in these items!!

    5. Usually during holiday events there are fruit and veggie trays, I would try to fill up on these things as opposed to eating
meatballs, chips, dips, wingettes and etc.

    6. Lastly, make sure you drink plenty of water!!!

I'm going to stick to my normal diet most of the time. However, I have 2 birthday parties (both for me, the whole turning 40 thing) and 3 seperate family Christmas parties and I'm going to eat whatever I feel like at them. There are loads of reasonably healthy people out there that gain a few pounds over the holidays and then take them back off afterwards. My ultimate goal is to be a reasonably healthy person.

It hasn't really affected me as on Thanksgiving I logged everything and even got up early to get a good work-out in. On Christmas I'm sure I won't get the work-out in, but I'm going to try to do well. Funny few days after Thanksgiving I went after an ice-cream. Just try to keep your mindset to eat as healthy as possible.

I joined this site about a year ago when I was morbidly obese.

    I'm not now. :-)

The key for me was that I realized, after three years of being so heavy, that I needed to change my relationship with food. I changed the foods that I ate and I drastically cut back on how much I ate.

The phrase that works for me is "Will this food help me reach my nutrition and fitness goals?"

    If it does, eat it.

    If not, don't.

Repeat after me: Never show up hungry. Have some carrots, pretzels, a small piece of fruit, or something in your stomach so you're not starving when you arrive.

Dress to impress -- no stretchy bottoms!

i budget calories on the days preceding and following holiday meals. on those days, i also tend to cut back on other meals and increase exercise. one day won't throw off your diet.
