I wish you could talk to my boyfriend, LOL. We got into a debate over this whole thing last night. I told him I wanted to start lifting heavy and he warned me that I would get too "bulky", oh Lord. I explained to him what I have been researching and learned about how that is not true, but NOPE, he just wasn't havin it. So I guess I'll have to prove him wrong0

Do it! My boyfriend is the same xD not about muscle gain, but nutrition. He thinks fat makes you fat, you need to slam a protein shake immediately after a workout, and no carbs at night. What do I know? Lol! I love the goober xD0

I refuse to work out around my husband. I don't need any comments from the peanut gallery. Last week, some friends were over, and one of the guys got curious about his bowflex. He set the rod to 50, and my husband said, "No! Be a man and put ALL the rods on!" If he treats other men like that, it's no wonder I get overwhelmed with unsolicited advice when I'm around. It's either criticism or he will sexualize the moves I make (like a downward dog yoga pose).
When I work out, it is for ME, not for anyone else. I don't need anyone to give me suggestions or tell me how I look. I even got pissed off at the trainer I worked out with once.
If I work out with someone, they have to let me go at my own pace, or else I won't do it.0 -

In my experience, the typical approach of blasting a muscle group once per week for an insane number of sets and exercises simply doesn’t work for the majority. Yes, fine, there are some who do fine on it. They usually have good genetics and hormones. But the number who failed completely with that type of training is legion. You can’t use the minority who succeed on it and ignore the majority who didn’t.
I only had time to skim this, so some went over my head in certain sections where I didn't get to read thoroughly. (I bookmarked it and will go back later). But this part jumped out at me. So many people still train this way... there is so much information out there telling people to train this way. I don't train this way, and some people tell me I'm wrong. Refreshing to read this

I'd put money down that I fit into this catagory:
"Some people simply lack the appetite to eat sufficient amounts to gain muscle (or any weight at all). While they may be able to force feed calories for a little bit, their appetite regulatory mechanisms kick in and they unconsciously reduce calories. Their bodies also tend to upregulate metabolic rate better than others, so they burn off more calories (a phenomenon called non-exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT)."
We'll see though: Signed up to try out Crossfit (along with my best friend, so maybe we'll both stick with it)! Neither one of us has ever tried any thing this structured before. Wish us luck0 -

Compound lifts is where its at! Many people think they have to do that even though it is more for advanced. I have seen several threads with this lately0 -

I have a friend that I argue this all the time with... almost not worth it. Exactly right, doesn't go anywhere.0 -
Ladies it takes many years to pack on so much muscle that you would be muscle bound bulky so I wouldnt worry about it much. But if you are going to eat and excess in cals you will gain some extra fat along with that muscle for sure.
and for NESSNOT there are weight gainer shakes that allow you to eat those extra thousands of cals. on top of your meals and you can always make your own shakes for me it was easier to make my own.0 -

I agree! I prefer making my own shakes!

Interesting read. I load up more on carbs on cardio days and more on protein on strength training days, but usually I try to get as much as possible of both in my diet. And it also seems the whole 'don't workout when you're starving' is true all along. This is why I sometimes skip working out whenever I land in one of these days where there's nothing to eat around the house again...uggh. Keeping out of starvation mode has been a problem for me for a while because my taste buds are so picky. I get tired of eating certain foods over and over again, and it doesn't help that I'm only a novice cook.
As for the whole bulking thing for women, it's impossible for a woman to look all Hulk-like unless they take steroids or something.0 -
FINALLY some very good reading and information!
Thx for posting.0 -

Beast? yes. Good info? yes.
Although, I was never one for the shakes-as-meal thing. Maybe I could do it if I made my own, but I prefer real food. Maybe eggs, toast, and ham before the gym and a Chinese buffet after the gym. I play a game at Chinese buffets where I try to get as many kinds of animals on my plate as possible. My personal best was nine different animals.0 -
