Getting through that time of the month

I came off birth control last month and this is my first period without taking it. Of course all my PMs symptoms are out of control now. Especially my cravings. i feel like if I don't get what I crave I could kill someone. How the hell am I supposed to get through this while keeping my sanity intact?

  • I'm going through the exact same thing right now. I ate Red Robin and Buffalo Wild Wings yesterday. I'm exhausted and all I want to do is eat. Yesterday I seriously couldn't even focus on anything but thoughts of food.
  • I keep a stash of "don't kill a child" chocolate hidden in a drawer. 1 Hershey's Kiss isn't all that many calories, and just the one when I'm really irritated will keep the edge off so my children survive my PMS. An intense workout, then a long hot shower and a glass of wine helps, too.

I know, me too! It really sucks. And then it goes away and you're like "oh yeah!". The exhaustion doesn't help either...

My biggest food cravings are milk, chocolate, peanut butter, and occasionally tomatoes. For my milk and chocolate cravings, my AM bowl of hot cereal with cocoa powder usually does the trick, and nips things in the bud right in the morning.....

I just laughed out loud about the stash of "don't kill a child" chocolate...

Anyhow, I'm with everyone above re: weight gain, chocolate cravings, mood swings...I absolutely hate it.

I also vote for seriously hard workouts...I am 42 years old and that is the ONLY thing that has ever truly helped me.

    Good luck to you...

I think that's where you really have to learn that food is not an enemy. If you occasionally allow yourself little portions, you're far less likely to have massive cravings that lead to "falling off the wagon". At least that's what I've found to be true. It's in the total denial of things that I find that's all I can think about.

Definitely down for some wine when it's that time.
  • I always gain between 2-3 lbs during this time unless I exercise at least a hour a day and eat low calorie snacks like 90 calorie fiber one brownies (they are great heated up and good without) and skinnycow ice cream. Those treats and those similar to that ease my overeating and feeling of BLAH....

ROTFL@ don't kill the children chocolate

I so feel you and am definatly down for some wine during then...

I cramp really bad and have found that excersing lessens the cramps a whole lot, which in turn lets me eat those cravings but not over do it..
  • Stability ball crunches! I feel like I can take my crabbiness out on my abs since that's the area causing the most pain. I hate the achy legs that happen every month (does anyone else get those?) because it makes it harder to get motivated to walk or run.

I know it sounds weird when you're already feeling bloated, but I find that increasing water intake seems to help too and nothing feels better than getting rid of that water on the last day - very cleansing!

Easy. DON'T deprive yourself. You want a chocolate? Eat one. Enjoy it. And stop right there.
  • I think I need some "don't kill the fiance" chocolate. I can deal with the kid during these times, but for some reason her dad is the one I want to maim.

Moderation is not a strength of mine... that is what gets me in trouble...
