Question for some Mama's

Hi ladies!

I have a question... Okay, well, I have a story first and then a question.

Okay, so I got pregnant at 19 and at 20 had a BIG (but beautiful) 9lb baby boy. I also had a Cesarean.

So being so young I'm thinking "My body'll bounce back from this" Right?

Well, here's what I ended up with:

Stretch marks from my pubic bone to my ribs and all the way across and a yucky big pouch of skin and fat that hangs.. Lol.

Anyway, what's funny about that is... at the... um.. crease? of the pouch is where my Cesarean scar is. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? What's also weird is that i don't have very much feeling at all in the skin from my belly button to the scar...

Okay, so for my question:

Have any of you ladies run into this problem? Does is ever actually go AWAY? I can just imagine my self as 60 lbs lighter but looking like a kangaroo with this big pouch of skin still chillin on my body...

The stretch marks don't really bother me.. just the .. pouch.

Lol, i know this post is a little gross and there are probably some nice mental images going around.. but I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice...

Thanks!!!

I also had a c-section about two years ago. I hope the pouch goes away. LOL. It shrinks I know that since it has gotten smaller. It may go away as you work out and do stomach exercises. After two years I am still numb on my lower abs in most places. It's kind of weird and creepy but you do get at least some feeling back. You will probably need to do some sit ups etc to get your pouch to tighten. And the stretch marks do fade quite a bit but never go away. Mine aren't as noticeable, especially since I have lost some weight. Don't know why. Hope this helps! How long ago did you have your baby?

I can say that I still have one area on my C scar that I still have no feeling. I had my c-section over 9 years agao with my first son...so I guess it has to to with individual bodies and who your surgeon was...IMO> The pouch will go give it time...work on your core and your crunches...

    Goodluck

I had a c-section 15 months ago. (and also had a 9 lb baby!) I won't really know how the pouch is until I get to my goal! But, hopefully doing ab exercises until then will help. It is also numb to the touch but I also still get "phantom" (or maybe not so phantom, I don't know)..pains. I think it's the nerve endings now and then.

Well... how long ago did you deliver?

I delivered my daughter (8 pounds 3 ounces) naturally, so no C-section scar.

I think it's a safe bet to say that it'll continue to get better.

I gained 30 pounds with my pregnancy and trust me, it was all belly. My tummy was huge! I also had one of those dark lines that run right down the middle & it took quite a while to go away. Probably 16-18 months before it was completely gone.

I'd say the best place to start is with your OB/GYN - I bet she'll have some input for you.

As for the stretch marks - I think it's all genetics on that one. I was lucky enough to avoid them but I have heard that they fade quite a bit after time! Yippee!
  • i had 2 c-sections... 2 and 4 years ago. i was also kind of old to be having babies (40 & 42 when i had them). i never had stretch marks so i can't help with that. but i have the pouch and no feeling on the scar. the "pouch" is actually going away, quickly. so i think with as young as you are, keep working at it and most of it will go away.

I didn't have a C Section for any of my babies but I do have a little pouch,
I'm at my goal weight (well, a pound over) and I still have an itty bitty pouch and some excess skin.
I don't know if the pouch will go away completely as I continue to exercise but it isn't as big as it used to be. I sure hope it does though!

Can't help much with the pouch - hopefully it will shrink. The numbness - I know about! I had my appendix and gall bladder removed several years ago (like 19) and my doc told me that the nerves in the skin get severed when they make the incision. Some of the nerves may grow back, but a lot of them won't. Therefore you will have numb areas or the whole area permanently. It's not too bad after a while.
  • OK, here goes.

My mom is an OBGYN...and NO, the pouch of skin never, ever, ever, ever goes away....unless you have plastic surgery. It can become somewhat flatter when you lose weight...but it'll resemble a deflated balloon more and more as you lose. At your goal weight, it'll likely look sort of wrinkly or raisiny and will still hang.

Your C-section scar area can have a loss of sensitivity because doctors have to cut right through nerves along with other tissues with the surgical incision. This MAY...over a long period of time, lessen because the nervous system can sometimes regenerate nerve tissue through periphery nerves...like picking up the slack on a work shift when someone quits.

Because you have such henious stretch marks, that indicates that your skin (for genetic or other reasons--like smoking) lacks the elasticity necessary to bounce back. The stretch marks will NEVER go away. So don't bother with all those crapola creams and stuff. Stretch marks are the parts of your skin where the collagen completely broke/tore along a long line because of the incredible stretching of the skin. Nothing's going to fix that, it's basically a big scar. But they will fade with time and become less noticable...it'll take several years for most people.

It's a bummer...but right now...science has no solution (except for plastic surgery).

WOW. Your post has made me extremely depressed. Why am I even trying to lose my tummy weight if it's gonna look like a friggin' raisin????????UGH!!!!!!
  • I had him almost 11 months ago, so I suppose I should get it more time before I start worrying..

I'm going to continue to do lots of crunches and leg raises (to work the lower abdominal muscles) and just try my best. I'm still super far from my goal weight so hopefully i'll see a big difference.

    Thanks guys!!!

I agree - quite the downer. Can't say I completely agree though.

As I wrote before, I did not have a C-Section, thus no scar - but I did have a very big pregnant belly! AND... it's flat as a darn pancake now. No raisin like wrinkles. Maybe when I get home I'll post a during pregnancy picture and a post pregnancy tummy picture.(Those of you on my myspace have probably already seen it) Granted my daughter is almost 5 now, so I've had a lot more recovery time but it is totally possible!

I'm am proof that it can happen so don't get discouraged!

    Keep plugging along!

I have 2 boys 12 & 10 (both have b-days in March). the 12y/o was a c-section the 10y/o a v-back. With the older I gained 55 pounds (I was a whale) and he weighted 9lb 9oz. The stretch marks don't go away. They do fade and you can bearly see them now. The pouch is not there. I do not look like a raisin. I'm not as firm as I would like to be and still have some weight to lose. (although when I was down in weight it was not bad.) I do not have any numbness anymore. I will never be as firm as before kids, but for the most part they are worth it:ohwell:

13 years ago, I gave natural to a 9lb 7oz boy with the head of a 3 year old.
3.5 years ago I had a c-sec with my daughter 8 8. I have most of the feeling back. It is not the same.
The skin is still there. I only gained 10 pounds with my son and 3 pounds with my daughter. I was ALL baby. I have stretch marks that are 1 inch wide. The marks are getting softer in color, and the skin is not hanging as much. Some will not have it, and other will. But, like tjblack said-it's all worth it.

What did you do to get it so flat?
My oldest is 7 and my tummy is so very jealous of yours.

I had a c section a little over 2 years ago and I have a little wrinkly and no pouch. I'm at my goal weight but still need to tone up a bit. So I don't think it's a lost cause at all! Keep toning up and you'll see some results. And most of my feeling has come back down there too.

Stretch marks are here to stay. I gained 40lbs with my son and lost 20 by the time I left the hospital!! I had a natural delivery and felt every inch of his 13inch head! :noway:

I carried my son REALLY low; had people telling me I was going to deliver soon 2 months too early! I have stretch marks from my upper thighs up to and slightly beyond my bellybutton. If you look at my profile pics, you can see them in the earlier ones. They have gone from the deeper purple/gray to pale pinkish and some are almost white already.

The pooch has shrunk with the weight loss as well. I don't expect to be rockin a six pack in the end, but my abs are coming back into sight! It's still a weird texture but it IS shrinking!

Don't give up. We are all individual and there is no "Everyone" response for your body. Just be sure to drop the fat as you build the abs or you will have 'fat abs' and look thicker than you want!

    Good luck! :flowerforyou:

Yuppp... mine are here to stay and I'm ok with it.
I have some behind my knees, thighs, butt, hips, stomach, breasts and on my upper arms near my armpits.
My first pregnancy did a number on my body.
I gained 70+ pounds and I see the damage now.
I've heard that cocoa butter can soften the stretch marks but I haven't tried it so I couldn't tell ya.
Think of them as your battle wounds... wear them proudly:bigsmile:

Joanna - a girl can always count on you for a boost!

Honestly - I'm not sure what it was that helped my tummy get flat... a lot of darn hard work! ;)

As for the wonderful stretch marks, didn't get any on my tummy but my chest grew so darn fast that they looked like they'd been attacked by a witch with really long finger nails! And yes, thay do fade. But I completely agree - wear them proudly!

    Have a wonderful evening ladies!

I'm sorry to bring up a really old thread but just wanted to post in here and maybe get a little hope. I too have a jelly belly. Both of my kids were natural deliveries and my "baby" is now 7 so I have NO excuses about this jelly belly still being here. I'm scared the older I get the harder it's going to be to go away. The ladies who posted about wrinkles & raisins have me cracking up over here. Like I have mentioned in some of my other posts before, as short as I am at 5'0" the pouch does NOT look proportionate with my height and sticks out like a sore thumb ESPECIALLY when I wear low cut jeans. The fat squeezes above the waist line of the jeans and then I wear a somewhat loose shirt to try and hide it. I'm SO conscious of it it drives me crazy!!

Im no pro or expert but i am a baby making machine so i might qualify to anwser this. I have had one natural birth and 2 c-sections in 4 year period. i put on 65-95lbs each time:sad: So my belly was yucky! I have found that the slower i lose weight the tighter my tummy gets. in the past i have gotten really thin really fast and my belly just kinda hung:sad: but now that im exercising and eating healthy and slowly losing weight it is slowly shrinking and becoming firmer. I dont expect a 6 pack or a tummy of a 15 year old that has never been pregnant but i hardly have a pouch now from the cardio and cruches i do which is great considering how i looked when i started all this. So i do think that there is hope for the pouch and at least with my personal body it is proven there is:bigsmile: good luck :glasses:

I'm pretty certain this will be the situation for me.

I have the same 'things' the original poster described -- horrible stretch marks from my rib cage to my pelvic area, no feeling along the c-section scar (not that I care), a lovely pouch, and a beautiful 3.5 year old. As I've lost weight, the pouch has shrunk a bit but I highly doubt anything except surgery will ever completely remove it.

While already being overweight when I got pregnant (185lbs, 5'4''), I gained 60lbs during my pregnancy (topping out at 245lbs). The damage I've done to my body is permanent. I can only hope through continued weight loss and eating healthy to keep my organs happy and lose as much excess belly fat as possible. I never imagine my stomach will be flat or bikini worthy, stretch marks aside.
