What to do at xmas?
I am having christmas with my partners family, and as with most families, there will be a lot of food. My partner has informed me that it would be very rude to weigh my food, or to even log it in public. I have no idea what he expects me to do. I either weigh and log my food, or I pass. I can't not eat for a week!!

Rough meassure? Or talk to his mum, mums are usually more approachable^^. Help ion the kitchen and you can get a hand in in regards to portion size control0

I also forget to mention that I have a horrible memory. If I don't log what I'm eating as I'm eating it, I WILL forget what I had/how much I had. So him saying I can't log at the table, well that kills me. I really don't wanna gain back all the weight I've lost in 2 months in 1 week!0

First of all, you won't gain all that weight back. You kinda need to enjoy life a bit as well ^^. If he says you can't log on the table as this is rude, tell him he therefore has to accompany you for a two hours after dinner walk to get some fresh air.
Or, you could use your phone and gtell them a white lie, something about just quickly replying to this chrismas sms of friends ^^0 -
You will be fine - you will not gain any weight overeating for one day. Trust me when I say, you won't even be hungry to stuff yourself silly.
You know what Christmas dinners are like, so just estimate before you go. Plug in some turkey, stuffing, bread, gravy, apple pie, cranberries, corn, anything that you typically eat or think you'll be eating. Most people are very traditional when it comes to Christmas dinner so there shouldn't be too many surprises. When you get there at least you know you'll have planned your day for it. Then keep in mind what you planned on and stick to it best you can. I find that when I do this, I don't even eat what I planned to simply because I can't eat loads off food all the time, nor do I want to (just feel gross!). So no, don't log at the table, but when you go home take a look at what you planned out and make adjustments then.
If you feel pressure to eat more from the family (because my mom thinks I don't eat enough, but when I was heavier she though I ate too much, sigh), then just say that you are not hungry! Or say that whipped cream gives you stomach cramps now, or whatever! But also, one little indulgence here and there really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
Hope that helps! Just relax, stressing definitely doesn't help.0 -
Just make sure you put your food on your plate... Measure in cups in your mind. I wouldn't worry about it too much... It is the Holiday's. Just make sure you get a workout in ahead of time and you don't go crazy overboard.0

Quick bathroom break to log it on your phone or write it down?0 -
Dexy, calm down! One day really isn't going to make you gain lots of weight. Nor is forgetting one or two food items.
Your partner is right that weighing and logging at a family social event is rude (unless they're okay with it). And it sounds like you need to get a sense of perspective about this. I rarely weigh anything, I have to estimate lots of food 'cos I live in New Zealand and most of our food isn't listed and I usually log after I've eaten and I'm still losing!
So, things you can do:
Exercise beforehand to build up extra calories.
Don't starve yourself before the meal and keep drinking lots of water all day.
Keep drinks calorie free (or sip one alcoholic/ juice/soda drink).
Pre-log whatever you're fairly sure will be there to eat.
Make the healthiest choices you can when you're there.
Do not mention weight loss and if someone brings it up, say a few things then let the conversation move on.
If you *HAVE* to, slip off to the bathroom and write yourself a few notes of what you ate.
Adjust your log to include whatever you did eat when you get home. Guess the portion sizes and if in doubt, go a little over what you think.
Enjoy the occasion!0 -

If you've been doing this a couple of months, you know a rough estimate of what most foods are going to have, calorie-wise. Mind your portions, eat slowly and drink plenty of water, and for heaven's sake enjoy your holiday with family!!!!0

Seriously? You will pass on a holiday with family if you can't log your food?
Please reconsider your priorities. The holidays come once a year.
Here is my Handy Holiday Survival Handbook.
* Be with your partner's family.
* Engage in merrymaking.
* Choose from the healthiest options among all food available.
* Consume all things in moderation.
* Drink lots of water.
* Get some exercise every day.
* Log rough estimates under the cover of darkness if you must.
* Return home happy.
* Wake up the next day and resume your logging knowing that you made the best of your holiday visits.

I wouldn't worry about it.
The Zombie Apocalypse is set to happen on December 22nd so you won't live to see Christmas anyways...
I'd suggest eating everything now and live the last few weeks of our lives fat and happy.0 -

Alternatively - you could just tell yourself whatever it was that worked last weekend that allowed you not to log.

This makes me very sad. It is great to be focused on health and fitness, but it is supposed to enhance your life - not completely consume it.
You have received some wonderful advice here. I hope you calm down and take it.0 -
I just took a quick look through your diary and it looks like you have your days when you log everything and other days when you don't. Giving a rough estimate during a wonderful holdiay week with your partner's family shouldn't be too difficult since you are not very strict with yourself normally about logging. Take a deep breath, make healthy choices when possible, indulge when it's not and ENJOY your holiday!!0

Ditto on this. I'd also that one of my criteria for portion control on holidays is to just eat less than I did last year. It's a pretty simple task to have victory. I also assess my troubles before I enter the room and then set a goal to eat less than I did last year or cap myself at a given point. For example, this Thanksgiving I assessed my biggest weakness to be rolls. (Last year I ate an entire pan by myself.) This year I capped myself at two rolls. So I had my two rolls and felt good about it. I didn't worry too much about the rest, but I just can't eat like I used to.
Whatever you do, don't let it ruin enjoying the holiday and don't let it prevent you from getting back on the wagon and back to 'normal' when it's all over.0 -

I'm pretty sure that's 2012 :bigsmile:
to the OP, COME OOOOON! It's the holidays, no one is expected to be perfect, especially the actual week of Christmas! I don't plan to eat on a deficit much that week, allow yourself to just keep to maintenance calories, which will feel like a ton of food if you've been keeping under for awhile! Plus there's no crime in accepting a delicious slice of pie. Just don't have slices :laugh:
All in all the biggest advice I could give is to turn of your brain for a minute and enjoy time with your SO. You should feel lucky to have extra family to enjoy the season with, not stress it!0 -
Eat when your hungry and don't stuff yourself or overfill your plate?
I ate TONS of food, four days of Thanksgiving, everything in sight. I swear I ate most of the turkey myself plus 4 pieces of pie, 2 pieces or cheesecake, and 2 or 3 pieces of cake. The damage? I gained .4 of a pound.
You'll be fine!0 -
Can you estimate, go to the bathroom and enter it there?0
