Has anyone on here gotten braces and found it a chore to even eat? I am having this problem, well not per say a big problem because I have lost weight, but I just have no motivation to eat anything that will get stuck in my braces for fear of walking around with food in them..lol

After a few days you'll be fine. I had braces for years and the only things I did not eat were corn on the cob, popcorn, gum, and candy - but I've never been big on candy.

I got braces when I was 30 years old, I hated having them on, but loved the finished product. You will get used to them quicker than you think. You learn what you need to do to avoid that food hanging from brackets lol. Tear up sandwiches into bite size pieces and try not to bite into anything, always small bites. Always carry a toothbrush with you. I can't tell you how many times I got odd looks brushing my teeth in a restaurant bathroom after a meal LOL.

I have been getting weird looks too. I like to brush every time I eat and at least 3 times a day so at work women go into the bathroom and give me this strange look because your taking care of your teeth..

A lot of people I know have been telling me that they had their braces on for 4 or more years and that their Ortho told them it would only take 2 years. I am afraid that it could be the case with me too.. hopefully not. How long did you have yours on for?

You'll get used to them. Whatever you do, where your retainer afterwards (do they still use retainers NOW? I don't know but if they do, wear it!). The retainer caused me to be very sore a lot so I eventually gave it up. Now I have a snaggle tooth because of it.

I've heard the horror stories of people stopping the use of their retainers and having to go get their braces put back on to fix the damage. I appreciate the tip though! I have waited too long and worked too hard to mess up my teeth now. This is something that I don't think I will screw up. I have wanted them ever since I was being called snaggle tooth in school so I'll be on top of my game with this one!

They told me to go eat a big steak..... um yeah.... guess that person hasn't had braces before because I struggled eating a fry when I first got them on!

Good luck...they told me 2 years and I had them on for 2 years and a couple of months. I am know in the retainer stage!

Same here, I brushed at work but after a year I got lax:embarassed:

My teeth were WAY worse than yours in your picture so I would imagine that the ortho is pretty spot on.

I had to have my wisdom teeth removed and two other teeth removed in the process so hopefully you won't have to have any of that done.

i got my treatment plan a couple of days ago so i am now at the stage where i just need to decide when i want to start. i was thinking 22nd december since i will be off work from then to 28 december so at least i would have a few days to get used to it. the ortho recommended i start beginning of january so i wont be in pain over xmas, however as i can't take anytime off work in january, i am not too keen on this idea.

i was told my treatment would take about 18 months. although i had consultation with another orthodontist a month earlier and they told me 12 - 14 mos. i was more comfy with the 2nd ortho though their treatment time is longer and abit more costly.

luckily i wont have to do any extractions!

the ortho did say the they would fit the lower arch first and then start on the upper arch about 2 months later. my main goal is to straighten and close multiple gaps. according to the ortho, closing gaps was easy, it was keeping them closed that was the problem hence why the retention stage will be so important. the intention is to have a permanent retainer fitted after the brace is removed and also wear a nightly retainer . it all sounds abit scary to be honest but i am abit excited at the same time.

I guess getting them on isn't all that bad.. It's just maintenance that is the pain in the butt. If you don't have to have extractions then getting them on Dec. 22nd would probably be alright. It takes some getting used to with eating, but you will be fine. The reason I was having such a hard time is because I had to have 7 extractions all at once and then ended up getting an infection where they extracted my impacted wisdom teeth. They are pulling my teeth apart and they are pushing yours together it sounds like we have very different ortho plans.

I had 7 teeth taken out all at once. 3 impacted wisdom teeth then 4 regular teeth 2 on top and 2 on bottom to make room for the "Crowding" Needless to say I was in a TON of pain!!!! It's getting better with everything. I am really wanting to eat a burger here soon..lol

wow, 7 extractions. that is quite alot. i dont know how i would cope with that.

    my biggest concerns are:
    - will it affect my speech?
    - how soon with i be able to have proper food?
    - will i be able to close my mouth after getting the braces?
    - how soon after having the braces fitted will the pain disappear?

True! Ish.. I never wore my retainer, and have kept straight teeth for years (after wearing 2 1/2 years).. As for my boss, she had braces, and DIDNT wear a retainer and her teeth shifted to have a gap....

at 2 1/2 years I just told my ortho that it was retainer time. I had a bad 'snaggle tooth' that got fixed in about 4 months and 2 years later i decided that they were straight and didnt want to wear them any longer.... :)

I would be careful of getting the ceramic ones. I have heard that they stain easily and if you drink coffee or tea it might be a bad idea because you can see all of the stainage from beverages/foods and such.

according to the info from my ortho, they do not stain though i am still abit suspicious. i guess the onus will be on me to ensure i keep them clean and make wise food colour choices lol

I got braces back in 1990 ( yes ancient times lol ) and omg they hurt so bad I didnt eat and ended up at 90lbs. But I'm like if I miss a meal or don't get my 1800 in then I lose. I had them on for five years and they left me with a permanent retainer on the bottom.
Basically when I had them tightened, I survived on mashed potatoes, jello, etc for a day or two.
I think now its totally different though. I had to have the headgear too. i was a mess.

I have braces on now (at 31) and should be getting them off in about 2 weeks! Whoo hoo! I have had them on for a year now. I have the white ceramic ones on and they do not stain, if and when you have to get the chain rubber bands on each of your teeth, the clear bands WILL stain with food, especially mustard! I learned that the hard way.

Ackeebee, I do not think they will affect your speech, or at least not a lot and you will get used to it. You will be able to eat proper food quickly after. My advice is to put the wax on each bracket that hurts your mouth when it rubs against the soft tissue, and the inside of your cheeks with quickly adjust and it won't hurt them anymore. Yes, you will be able to close your mouth. The pain may be achy for the first week after getting the braces off. Take something over the counter and keep it in your system and that will help immensely. ALSO, like others said, WEAR your retainer after you have them off. I had them already as a teenager and stopped wearing mine, and voila, they are back on at 31, so I will wear my retainer in two weeks when I get them off!!!!!

so how did you find the ceramics appearance-wise? i have not actually seen anyone in my day to day life with them (or maybe i just didnt notice lol) so i am not sure how they will look on me. do you think they are very obvious?
  • I got braces (I'm 23) July of this year. It might be a good thing to wait until after the first of the year becuase you won't be used to your braces enough to enjoy Christmas dinner. I promise! They don't take very long to put on. I got them put on first thing in the morning and went to work afterwards. I can say that I'm obsessed with cleaning them though! And I get weird looks from people in the restroom too. It was difficult to eat at first, but you learn as you go. I've got ceramic on the top and metal on the bottom (that's how my ortho does it) The ceramic are a little bigger, but it isn't bad. They don't stain either. Just the elastics they put around the brackets. Don't get clear! I've been getting the metal color and they don't stain. Good luck with your braces! I can't wait to have a beautiful smile =)

edit- Diet Oreos - as this is a weight loss site.

i get your point about not being able to enjoy my Christmas dinner but to be honest, I am more concerened about the pain aspect and prefer to have to deal with that on my days off than in January when I will have to go straight back to work. It's worth thinking about though. also, as i will only be getting the lower arch immediately, hopfully i would be able to survive Christmas :-)

You need to chill, hun. You'll be able to talk just fine, but you might not be able to whistle while they're on. I couldn't. You can close your mouth, but your mouth will feel weirdly full until you get used to them. You can eat normally after a couple hours, and the pain lasts a couple days after each adjustment max.

Also, my friend had ceramic braces, and to me they just made her teeth look like they were plaque covered or something. I prefer the metal because at least when people look at you, there's no question what's on your teeth. That's totally my preference, tho.

The ortho said I would have to wear mine for 2 years (give or take a few months) The ceramics aren't very noticable so I wouldn't worry about that. The pain isn't horrible... It just takes a little while to get adjusted to. I got both top and bottom all at once so it might not be as bad with just the lower. I know that I just wanted them to put the braces on me as fast as they could! haha. I've been wanting my teeth straight for so long I didn't care about anything else at the moment. And to be honest, now that I've had them for a few months, I sometimes forget I have them... I can't even remember what my mouth was like before them.
