I consume around 150 g's a day which represents about 20% of my total calorie consumption. Anything under 50% is considered a lower carb type diet, not to be confused with a very low carb diet, popular with the ketogenic crowd.

Somewhere around the 50g mark. But it's quite subjective...others are at 150g or 100g or 75g....but all of the above are low considering the normal "recommended" carb intake.

There's no one definition that I know of, but I tend to think of it as:
from zero to 20g = very low,
    21g to 80g = low
81g to 150g = just "watching" your carb intake. This is a wider range so a bit easier to stick to, but won't have the dramatic effects of the lower levels, I think.

    What dramatic effects are those?

honestly, they make lower carb carbs everywhere. Breads, pasta, rice, buns, cereal, toritillas etc. You dont need to change the amount necessarily just switch to the low carb version. My mom has found a lot of these that taste very good since she is diabetic, if you want to try some of them I can send you links to the lowest carb ones we have found!
