Flying on Vacation

Just a little topic to get a sound off on people's traveling habits... I'm heading to TX to celebrate Christmas and New Year's with my family ( :drinker: :happy: ) and it's made me curious as to your healthy travel habits? My flight includes a 4 hour layover...there is a wonderful wine bar in the airport though so I will probably spend much of it there :happy: I do plan on taking a walk around the airport, even though my flights are in the same terminal...I know I'll want to walk after sitting in a tiny seat for a long time! What about you? Do you fly or drive? Do you take food with you or use it as a "cheat" day? What about those loooong layovers?

I generally eat whatever I'm in the mood for while traveling, but I don't consider any food "cheating" per se. Cheating implies there should be guilt, and I refuse to feel guilty for anything I want to eat. It's unhealthy to think that way.
I have, however, taken a preset amount of time and walked in the airport... I did it at O'Hare (a fantastic place to walk around during a layover by the way) for 45 minutes once during one of my longer layovers. And then afterward I sat at the bar and enjoyed a nice tall beer! :drinker:
Enjoy it... you're on vacation... don't overdo it... but definitely let loose a little and enjoy it.0 -
When we drive we take foods and buy bananas at a gas station along the way. Sometimes the fast food pull is unavoidable if the kids (or I) wont eat what I bring though, it happens, move on.
On planes, I walk to my gate and then sit and read. I sometimes buy a sandwich at one of the newsagent type stands if it's over a meal, I rarely go sit at the restaurants and eat/drink though. If I have the kids it's Mcdonalds mostly because the one day I tried to do a sandwich with the big girl, she made a mess...
Have some fun but don't go overboard and undo everythign you've worked for - otherwise, what's the point?0 -
take an apple & some nuts in a baggie. apples are portable & great appetite suppressant. I totally support the wine bar thing- wine is not fattening in small qtys and is good for you
Remember to HYDRATE flying dehydrates you (I don't know why)
Have fun & don't stress about every little calorie - do that next month

Most airports (especially the larger ones - O'Hare, LAX, Newark Liberty, Houston) have healthy options.
There's an amazing wine bar at Houston - Le Grand Comptoir - if that's your connecting airport and the one you reference. Their food is amazing as well as their wine list.

With a long layover I would recommend packing some non-liquid snacks in your carry on just in case. I've had a few recent business trips and it was a struggle to find healthy options or even single serving packaging. All the trail mix and pretzels seem to be in the "big grab" size and way overpriced on top of it.
Since you have a long layover you will have more options available for a reasonable sit down meal, but just in case you end up stuck on the tarmac or with a delayed flight it will be nice to know you have good options available in your bag.0 -
Thanks for all the advice! Yea I've done this particular trip before I'm just curious what everyone else's habits are...I plan on taking a few munchies, although I'm flying Southwest and they do serve the peanuts still. (YUM!) I'm actually going through BWI and they have a Vino Volo which I always enjoy sitting in...helps forget I'm in an airport! hahaha. I plan on walking the airport once we land and then spending the last couple hours at Vino Volo, just sipping a glass of wine or sampling a wine flight. Good call on the hydrating though...I always forget how drying the air in those altitudes can be. Keep on comin with the travel tips, you can never learn too much! And of course Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!0
