Losing weight and drinking..

Need some advice when it comes to losing weight and drinking alcohol. :)

I am on a 1200 calorie diet, and I stick to it well, and exercize 3-5 times a week but never lose weight throughout the week. When Saturday comes and I weigh myself (after drinking Friday night =) ) I will lose 2 lbs. I assumed when It first happened it was dehydration so I made sure to drink alot more water the next few days, but assumed the weight would slowly come back as I rehydrated myself. It never did. The same thing has happened for about 2 months now..never lose til my Saturday weigh-in and like clockwork -- 2 pounds off. I havent been drinking for the past 3 weeks, and haven't lost a pound.

Any ideas? :p

I think the best way to lose weight is to make the people around me drink. I'm not a doctor.
  • I don't want to drink to have to lose weight? LOL i mean it's been nice so far.... but obviously not a good 'overall plan' :p
  • Kinda seems that way huh.. lol :)

As absurd as it sounds, drink.

If it works, go for it. I drink a glass of red vino daily an hour or so before bed - LOVE IT!
And it has been said this is actually healthy.

  • Its probably from the increase in calories. Try eating more calories one or two days of the week and see if you get the same result.

Thats funny because I am usually down a couple of pounds after drinking too.... in fact I was down 3 this week after a couple of vodka drinks ( I weigh everyday). I do attribute mine to dehydration or something tho because it came right back. But yes, I am always down for a day or two after drinking. Usually doesn't stick for me tho :(

I really don't think it's related. It's a great observation, though; and what I can tell is that you may need to consume more calories. I know it is a scary thought, but that is the connection that I make in my head. :drinker:

I'm usually down a few pounds just after I drink but it doesn't stick with me. I love my wine and if I'm not careful it puts weight on me so count your blessings. Red wine is good for you  Have fun and good luck on your journey!!

I havn't had a drink for nearly 5 years UNTIL the firday before last.

The following morning I was showing a 3lb loss seemingly overnight. Like you I assumed it would come back on, but it didn't. #

The only thing I put it down to was the wild increase in calories. I always stick to between 1200-1400, but on that night it jumped to almost 3000.

Perhaps such a harsh calorie spike has something to do with it.

I shall be re-testing the theory in a week or so

    THIS!!!!

The exact same thing happens to me, and i couldnt figure out why. I weigh in on Sunday mornings, on Sats after drinking, i've lost weight.

    Cheers to alcohol ;)
  • Same happens to me !
  • Alright, well I guess as long as we all keeping hitting the booze all is well? lol... i didn't think about the calorie spike but that would explain it! My weekly cheat day?

Lucky for all of you guys! I drank last weekend.. and I had been sooooo good all week, didn't over do it on food.. and exercised to make up for my booze.. and I gained 3.8 that weekend!!!!!! I have lost 2 lbs of the "gain" and currently I am 1.8 from my lowest..but it has hurt my ego.. and makes me not want to drink....but given the upcoming season.. I will likely drink again.. and hopefully not climb the scale and disappoint myself!!!!!!!! Wish I were like most of you!!!!!!!!!

I am the absolute reverse of this. I have a few drinks on a saturday night and it can wipe out all the good work I have done during the week. Lucky for me I only have every second weekend off work so to enjoy a drop or two or I would be getting nowhere!!! :drinker:

When you're out drinking are you 'clubbing'? You'll probably find that you're losing weight because you're out dancing and on your feet for hours, which is a HUGE workout!!! ....Or because you throw up the whole days food when you get home after a few too many?? Lol.
Haha I wish this was the same case for me! But I bloat BIGTIME after drinking!! Count yourself lucky =)

I always wonder just how many calories I'm burning when I'm out dancing. But it's intermittent dancing for around 5 hours so all I end up with is the knowledge that 3+ inch spike heels are not the best dancing shoe.

FWIW - I have lost 22 lbs so far, and the one thing I *didn't* change was the amount of alcohol in my diet. If I can't drink AND lose weight at the same time, I'd rather be overweight, thankyouverymuch!

Ive noticed the same thing, if I eat my normal calories and drink the next morning ill weigh myself and ill have a loss, now if I eat bad foods that day it will go up for a few days

In most cases, if I do drink it's just a few beers or a few glasses of wine and I can usually work most of it into my calories for the day, maybe going a little over. The problem I have is the day after I drink I am STARVING! And all I want to eat is bad food!!

Because of this I usually avoid drinking because I don't need any more reasons to crave things I really shouldn't be eating, but I really would love to be able to have a few drinks a few times a week and just feel normal the next day.

Does anyone else get this way?

You are so lucky, I gain 5 lbs by just looking at a beer, or at least it seems. lol What kind of alcohol do you drink?

I definitely wish this was the case for me! I feel you staceyb2003! I am a beer drinker since there are so many brewery's where I live. However just after drinking 2 or more beers I become extremely bloated and the next few days I weigh more. I've even tried amping up how much water I drink to help with the dehydration and it doesn't change the affect at all.

Honestly if you can get away with it more power to you! I have a girlfriend on weight watchers who drinks Vodka with Crystal Light, low in calories and does the trick. Sadly not a very good beer substitute though. :P
