Best Places to Shop for Dresses

Where do you do your dress shopping? I obviously am clueless when it comes to them, mainly because I'm not big on wearing dresses. However, I think I'm going to need one for New Years but haven't a clue where to begin.

Two things:

I would like some in store suggestions as I will most definitely have to go in and try them on. *Not opposed to online though.*
I would like to not break the bank so best deals would be nice if you know of any.

PS: I'm not a clothes snob but let's steer clear of any Wal-Mart suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Cheap dress you won't wear very much / need again: Forever 21

Cheap dress that you want to maybe wear a few more times: H&M

Expensive dress you plan to dry clean: Express, White House Black Market

GL! Feel free to share your final choices! :)

**Edited to add: Go in store and try things on. If you end up buying online, check the store here first http://www.retailmenot.com/ to get free shipping, free schwag, or even % off discounts. :)

I like to go to TJ Maxx because they have a huge selection of nice dresses for less.

Depends on what you are looking at. For New Year's Eve, should I presume a gown?

Not a long gown. I'm 5'2 and long skirts/dresses simply don't work for me. Something classy and not too short.

When it comes to department stores, try Macy's, Nordstroms, Lord and Taylor, or even Saks Fifth Avenue.

As for other store suggestions, in no particular order:
    - Banana Republic
    - Ann Taylor
    - j.Crew
    - Michael Kors
    - Lauren by Ralph Lauren

I won't get into brands themselves. That comes down to style and silhouette.

I love Dress Barn, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Macy's (online selection of dresses is astronomical)

That would be my list...I used to live near a Dillard's that had a pretty good petite section and good sales.

I did find a dress I like online at Dillards today.

I've had great luck with JC Penney, Dillard's and Sears. $20 (ish) for super cute or really nice dresses (sale racks! 80% off).

Im going to slightly hi-jack and ask if anyone knows where you can get them for TALLS without having to order them. Im about 4 inches too tall apparently.
  • I don't like to wear dresses a lot either. But when I do have to wear them, I usually get mine from Catos, Maurices, or Dillards. Hope this helps you out.
  • Forever 21. Super cheap and cute, although not ideal for multiple uses.

My main advice is if you find something you like but it isn't "just right" don't be afraid to have it altered.

I sew a lot so I make most of my dresses, I'm also not afraid to alter a dress I buy if it isn't just right.

I ♥ Modcloth! But I scour Nordstrom Rack and Marshall's. You can't go wrong with a wrap dress, every woman looks great in one no matter her shape! I also LOVE Francesca's, they always have trendy clothes but they are wearable for a range of ages.

I'm sort of afraid the clothes look too hip or young for me there. I could be wrong though. I'm not a big fan of clothes shopping in general but I'm trying to change that. Forever 21 clothes are okay for a 30 something?

I like dress barn-- classy but still pretty young looking, and they have a regular side and plus size side, which is nice.
  • There are some at forever 21 that could be appropriate for any age. Just avoid the flashy ones. There are some reallllly cute simple ones. I just love dresses :)
