This seems a bit more malicious than the usual urban legend:

There is no flesh eating disease in bananas, and if you ate a banana, you do NOT have to burn off your own flesh to prevent amputation or death!

Who is sick enough to make something like that up?

    The CDC set up a special hotline for this? I guess I should be glad that people are trying to verify the information before believing it, but... wow.

    On the bright side, I foresee the cost of bananas dropping, just like pork did after the last swine flu scare.

    I hear red wine has arsenic in it. Get a TV doctor to back that and lets watch the price drop. go and spread the word on the internets!!!

    The flesh eating disease referenced is probably someone who confused it with bacterial / fungi infections that plague our modern Cavendish banana crops:
