So, I've recently started running/jogging. I would like to get the proper shoes to avoid injury and because my tennis shoes are falling apart. But, there are so many options out there, where do I even start?????

go to a running store and have them fit you for the right shoes. i have a pair of asics and i LOVE them, but everyone is different. they can usually recommend a good pair and they are definitely expensive ($70-120 range) but it is so worth the money. good luck!

I follow Courtney from Biggest Loser on Twitter. I asked her and she said that Bob Harper gave them brooksrunning shoes at the end of the show. She says she will never run in anything else. I am going to get a pair of those...light, form fitting and great for your feet. You can look them up on amazon.com or brooksrunningshoes.com : )

there is a store I love to go to. I have only been there once want to go back when I get the money about 100 dollars shoes but worth it. They ask you what kind of shoes you want based on what you will doing in the shoes then they ask you to walk around and then they tell you based on how you walk what kind of shoe you need. It was the best shoe buying experience I have ever had and most comfortale shoe. The store is called fleet feet sports. More of a running store. I don't know where you live but I know they are a chain store I don't know how big they are. I sure there are other stores like them that really know what they are talking about when it comes to feet but this is the only one I have been too.

This is really the best advice. I also have asics and love them, but a running store can get you one that fits your needs. Try going during a sale (I got about $50 off shopping on Memorial day weekend - though that's a ways away now)! Be ready to spend the money, but your feet will thank you!

You americans are lucky!! I think my Saucony's were about $180 at the running room here in Canada - but i'll be ordering the same pair online now that I know what they are because they are CLOUDS!!!
  • I use the Nike Barefoot style running shoes. They are Nike+ Free Run, by far the most comfortable shoes I have ever ran with. Coast between 60-100 and you can get the Nike+ app for your iPhone/iPod if you have one, track your run times, pace and distance with it.

here is a link i found from ebay. I bought mine from a vendor on here for 69 vice 99 in the store.

I swear by Brooks, but definately get fitted for some, I have pretty flat feet so those are the best for me. I have the Brooks Beast they run about $130/pair but you may be able to find last years models for less.

I agree with going to a running store, not a big box store, and getting fitted. Each person is so different and needs different things. I can only run in Nike and Saucony but that may not be the case for someone else.

When you go take your old shoes. They'll examine the way the tread is worn and then watch you walk/jog/run. From what they see they'll show you the types of shoes you should be looking for.

    Your body will thank you.

i went to a specialist shop and got fitted. then i went online and found a way better deal for exactly the same shoe. i live in new zealand and got fitted for new balance 1080's (and they are perfect for me- and i got the chance to try on heaps of other shoes to make sure they were perfect). they were $280nzd in the shops, but i went online and got them delivered from the USA for $180nzd ($50 of htat was the international delivery fee, but still heaps cheaper than getting them here).

good luck with it- the right runners makes a tonne of difference.

I will say that the running store was good at assessing my gate (under or over pronator) and that shoe guides in fitness mags will give top lists for those types of shoes (ie if you roll you may need a more stable shoe, etc).
    Best luck to all!

I know people have already said it, so I'm adding this comment for emphasis. Go to a running store and get fitted. They should watch you walk and some stores will even have you run on a treadmill to analyze your gait.

Also.. running shoes should never feel like they need to be broken in. I made that mistake the first time I bought running shoes and the sales person was nice enough to let me know this little fact. lol
  • The first thing to look at is how you run. Do your shoes wear down faster on the outside or on the inside of your soles? If the inside of your soles wear down first you have some motion control issues and you need to make sure you buy a stability or motion control shoe. If your shoes wear down pretty on the outside or if they wear down pretty evenly, then you need to get a cushion shoe. Specialty running stores usually have people who can watch you run and look at your old running shoes and tell you what type of shoes you need. They can also help you get a good fit which is important with a running shoe. When you eventually find a shoe that works well for you, you won't need to go to a specialty running store every time, but for your first pair or two of running shoes its a really good idea.

Thanks everyone for your great advice. I think they do have a running store close by, 26.2 runners or something like that. I'll check it out.

Wondering since you like Saucony and Nike if you have MAJOR high arches like me... Curious!
