IMO..Its best from fresh food. There are many different types of protein in real food vs maybe 1 in a supplement..among many other things. The real food is slower digesting and whey, for example, is a quick digested. It should be treated as just that...a supplement. I know there are many other reasons but this just off the top of my head.

I was told that if you are doing weight training (muscle building) Whey protein isolate is better as it is very quickly absorbed into the body and works on the rebuilding the tone muscles fibers . Egg Whites are also good source of protein but stands next to whey protein supplement. If you are not looking at muscle building for weight loss then protein from fresh food should be sufficient.

fresh food no matter what.. it absorbs at alot better pace and your body gets to obsorb most of it.. as for protein poweders only recommend them post workout as it absorbs real fast.. so if u were to drink it any other time... it would be a very expensive piss..

I vote for "Real food" but it can be difficult at times, especially when calorie restriction is a goal. I utilize both whey and "slower acting" casein powders in my diet to help keep my numbers high enough. I use whey when I wake up as a milk substitute in my morning cereal and also post work out. I use casein at night.
