30 day shred shreds knees?

Hey all, I saw some clips online for the 30DS and see a lot of people log the 30DS in their exercise logs. I looked up the DVD and was thinking about ordering it. I try to research things before I buy them, and saw some disturbing reviews on some other sites and I did a forum search on here trying to find some info and couldn't so I hope that this thread isn't redundant. I'm sorry if it is.
First off, I'm 5 foot 10 and 330 pounds, putting me in the morbidly obese category. However, I used to do a lot of manual labor jobs, and don't have a problem with the exercises I do so far, for example using the elliptical, and doing Zumba! (intermediate 40 minute sessions).
I wanted to do the 30DS every other day and on the days that I don't I have a yoga/stretching routine on my Wii, just to get up and stretch and be moving.
I am concerned however about the number of people who claim that the 30DS killed their knees. My mother has bad knees and weak joints and I am not exactly willing to find out if thats genetic.
So MFPers, now that I have hopefully NOT bored you to death with my obnoxiously long post (sorry) I had a few questions:
*Does the 30DS hurt your knees?
*Do you do the 30DS every day or every other day?
*Do you find that you have to further modify the moves to avoid joint pain?

My first 30 days of it, I did every day, on my 2nd round and do 3-4 a week, I now alternate with Jillian's Yoga Meltdown.

Im getting ready to hit level 3 tomorrow, and I do it almost every day. I started from a sedentary point, and just jumped I to it. The only problem I had was being sore the second day. I've never had an issue with my knees bothering me from it. If you do the exercises improperly im sure it could hurt them, but j.m. constantly reminds you not to break over the toe at the knees.0

I did the 30DS everyday for a month. It did not hurt my knees one bit, haha that was actually the only place i was not in pain. The moves are actually quite simple. You do sit ups, crunches, reverse crunch, lunges, jumping jacks, push ups, jump rope, butt kicks, you stretch for 5 mins and you have a 5 min cool down. Its fun its just intense theres no down time and jillian likes to push peopie to their limit . I would suggest getting the dvd . Maybe you should ask your dr to see if he feels it would be okay for you to do it. Good luck to you0

I am 5'4" weigh 227 lbs and have been doing the 30 day shred continuously for 13 days with one day break between levels. Initially I found I could not do the Jumping Jacks continuously and could not do the jump ropes. I just continued to move during these moves and by the tenth day I was able to do all of the Jumping Jacks and jump rope with a break in between. I am also doing Zumba for 2 days of the week and elliptical three days plus treadmill for a day or two (40 mts each) in addition to the tape. My knees hurt a little but whenever I feel pain I have eased back and also taken a couple of advils. The level two is really killing and I will probably do it longer than 10 days. If you cannot Jump at least move, sometimes I even jog in place. Granted it may not be the right way, but I am working towards doing the tape perfectly somewhere down the road. And oh, I have been somewhat active prior to this although lately I had become very lazy and had to kickstart my weightloss program. I have been able to do this for two weeks now. Hope this helps.0

in the beginning with all the jumping, my knees did hurt a little after workout, but as i continued it stopped. now my shins ache after workout. but i like 30ds. i do it every other day or two days i would usually workout to some of my other dvd's just so i don't get bored. i tend to get a little bored after awhile, so i switch up a lot.0

thanks for all the replys all, I can do jumping jacks, and didn't have trouble with any of the EA fitness games on my Wii, but really hesitated at the number of online reviews saying they blew their knees out.
These people were probably just doing it wrong, I think I'll go ahead and drop a copy of the 30DS in my christmas stocking0 -
I haven't experienced any knee pain while doing the 30DS but I make sure I do the knee circles in the warm-up on all the levels (I think she leaves them out in level 2). You can modify the jumping moves and make them lower impact if you do get any twinges. It's an excellent workout for getting you moving and giving you potential to improve. Also, although it's called the 30 Day Shred you definitely don't have to do it in 30 days - you can stay on a level as long as you need to. I did do it straight through first time but now I do either level 2 or 3 every morning and sometimes level 1 as a warm-up before a run. Alternating it with some yoga or stretching workouts sounds great.

Can I ask a question?
When people say 'jump rope', do you literally need a skipping rope, or is it just an exercise done without a rope?

YES!!! I was in severe knee pain for about 3 months. I was unable to do ANY workout from that DVD. However her other DVD’s have not been a problem for me at all….

YUP I did it every day for a month and then the pain started.. it was not my form. I have GREAT form

yes, I STOPPED the workout I switched to P90X and have not had any problems since.0 -
Level 1 really hurt my knees if i'm honest. I did 5 days and it got quite bad, had a 2 day rest, did 3 more days then went onto level 2 which was fine so i did 12 days on level 2. I have osgood schlatters disease in my left knee and also tore a ligament when i was 12 so i do have "knee problems" but i've managed to work through it and i am so much stronger now.
i live on the 3rd floor of a building with no lift, and have to carry a 31lb toddler and a pram up and down on a daily basis. before i did the shred it was really hard going, but its a LOT easier now. I dont get as out of breath and its not painful on my knees at all anymore. i'd definitely give it a go x0 -
I love 30 day shred and it is very effective, but it gave me knee pains. I have to modify by not coming down so hard on my knees. I also don't bend down as much. I still workout with the shred. I just have to be more careful.0

I just started the new one today. I did experience some discomfort but I have broken both of my legs at the knees so I try to ease my self into doing things. I would still advise the dvd because the only way to strengthen your knees is to workout and the lighter you become the easier it will be. I can also complete most of the P90X workouts and I am 200lbs and 5' 3" but I have been as heavy as 245 so don't be discouraged it will come over time!0

I was doing it for 3 days, and now I'm not supposed to do any exercise (until I heal) because I hurt my knee so badly. I wasn't doing anything incorrectly. 2 years ago, I lost 45ish pounds with a trainer, so I know how to do everything, but I did something to my knee in that first video. Be careful....when my knee first started hurting, I should have stopped, but I didn't...I went to the gym, did 2 miles of walking, and 30DS the next day. Very bad idea!

30DS did hurt my knees a little, but I have a lot of trouble with lunges, if they're being moved in and out of quickly. She does have some static lunge moves and those aren't a problem for me. Form with lunges is really important though, so now I've switched to doing sumo squats or chair squats instead of lunges - I still get a great workout and no knee pain. I was 227 the first time I did 30DS (in July). It's a great workout, when I began I couldn't get through the full set of push-ups - even doing the modified version. I couldn't get through all of the jumping jacks, it kicked my *kitten* all over the place. Now I run up four flights of stairs at school without thinking twice about it, I do Ripped in 30 and find myself wanting more. My endurance is through the roof, and my strength has increased immensely. I couldn't recommend this dvd more.
Don't worry if you have to modify even 75% of the moves, or if you're pausing it left and right - we all get where we're going at our own pace. Like I said, I still can't do alternating lunges properly, but the benefits are uncountable!0 -
*Does the 30DS hurt your knees? - Yes, I have never had knee issues before but started to experience them after starting the 30DS. I had to see a physiotherapist and he told me to stop doing the squats and lunges so excessively.

*Do you find that you have to further modify the moves to avoid joint pain? - At that time, I didnt realize that the 30DS was hurting my knees but after my PT asked me about the changes I made in my exercises, he said I should not work on the 30DS anymore.0 -
Some parts of the 30 DS have bothered my knees, but that's generally b/c I already have knee problems. Day 1 I really pushed myself too hard and probably wasn't using very good form, and I was in a lot of pain for 3 days afterward (not just in my knees, pretty much everywhere LOL). Once I got back into it I figured out that I could use better form on certain things (mainly the squats and lunges) and if jumping movements got to be too much I would just substitute in a non-jumping movement from another part of the workout so I wasn't just standing still. Some jumping movements I am fine with, others I have to either do the 'beginner' version or occasionally sub something else.
I do it almost every day now. After that first break, I haven't had to take another rest for pain after learning to pay better attention to my body. Actually after a few days I started doing it 2 times per day, just doing my modifications when I felt they were absolutely neccessary. I'm a little over 1/3 of the way through the program and even though I've had to modify some things, I am still seeing great results.0
