Having trouble eating enough calories!

I didn't realize how little I actually ate until I started using MFP. I am having a hard time eating enough calories for the day and I know this isn't good. I made my food diary public so feel free to take a look even though it's not for many days. I could really use some suggestions on what I could do to help increase my calories in a healthy way, without having to pile them on at the end of the day. Thanks in advance!

  • You must eat enough calories in order to survive. There is no way around it. Did you start dieting when overweight? If so, you obviously know how to eat enough, and even too much, so find the balance between too little and too much. You really shouldn't take in less than 1500cal a day, and your diary says less than 500cal for yesterday. It is considered clinical starvation to eat under 1000cal a day, and is deadly. You absolutely must be famished, it's hard to believe you can't eat more than 500cal a day, I can eat that in a snack. Are you kidding with us, or is this a real question?

Yes, it's vital you consume enough calories! I'm not sure if you're trying to lose any weight but I know from firsthand experience that if you eat significantly less than your recommended amount you end up plateauing badly because your body thinks you are in a starvation situation and adjusts your metabolism accordingly. If you're not trying to lose weight, not enough calories to maintain is just generally unhealthy.

I'd recommend peanuts (raw, non-salted). They're jam packed with calories but otherwise are pretty good for you. And you'd be surprised how few you need to eat in a day to boost your calories up a bit. A palmful might be enough.

I am eating more than 500 calories a day, I think you may have looked at todays diary which I haven't finished yet. Sorry. :-) I typically eat 800-1000 a day before I started mfp. I have had a hard time gettting to 1200. I can't eat nuts, otherwise this would be helpful. I work alot so I am trying to find quick and healthy things to help boost my calories.
  • Took a look at your diary....I couldn't get by on that! Remember to try and have balanced meals. Eat carbs, and protien. I see you like boiled eggs, me too! Try adding a piece of high fiber, whole grain toast, dry. I like to slice up my egg, and eat it as a sandwich, and have a piece of fruit. I aim for my breakfast to be around 300-400 cals, becasue I typically don't have time for a snack before lunch. Then for lunch I like to have a salad, if I don't add any protien, I will eat cottage cheese on the side, and have a glass of milk. Then dinner, I like brown rice, chicken and veggies. These are just a couple of some of my favorite meals. Just make sure you eat larger portions of the good stuff! Instead of 1 oz of chicken, eat 4 oz, its good for you!

You have only been logging for 3 days,The first day you were over then slightly under then under by quite a lot. I would suggest loggin everything for a couple of weeks as you may find it averages out a bit over the week.

I think that some people may not understand how someone could eat too few calories in a day. Alot of people gain weight from eating too many. And you may have gained weight at a time in your life when you WERE consuming more calories. Even though someone has gained weight doesn't mean that they always eat that way. A drastic change in your eating habits, such as eating a lot to then not eating enough, can really mess with your metabolism. Your body needs at least 1200 calories a day just to thrive, this means that if you don't eat this amount it can affect your metabolism. So even though you may only typically consume 1000 calories a day you could still not lose any weight. You have to eat calories to burn calories. It sounds completely backwards but it's true. I went from consuming 1800-1900 calories a day with no exercise and being 256 lbs and maintaining that weight. When I first started losing weight I cut my calories by 500. I saw great results so I decided to cut more calories. Eventually I was eating only 900 calories a day but then I stopped seeing results....why? Well, my body wasnt getting the fuel it needed to burn calories. I had a hard time at first trying to increase my calories because I had gotten so used to eating so little. I gradually increased my calories to around 1200, some days are still hard for me to reach my goal. You aren't the only going through this, those who are critical towards you clearly don't understand the mechanics of the whole thing. I am guilty of not understanding as well at one point in time. Just keep your chin up and do your best. It's not gonna happen overnight. Good luck!

You diary has entries for 3 days, is that right? One day you're over, the next you're under, and today's not finished. I think you need to be eating & logging for awhile longer before assuming you can't eat enough. Track your food for a couple weeks, then re-assess.

I would agree with this, but nearly *half* of her calories for the "over" day were from beer.
