Been hearing lately about this new craze fitness regimen called BODY PUMP. Is anyone familiar with this? I know they offer this with my Y membership and just wanted to know what I was getting myself into. I don't want to bulk up as I hear it involves almost and hour of weight lifting, but I do want to be lean and toned. Anybody??? Your advice and opinions are appreciated.

I love BodyPump and aim to go 2-3 times a week. It's an all over body workout to music using a bar. I would def give it a go...start off light to get your technique right and go from there.

I just don't understand why people think lifting weights will ever bulk you up. It's not going to happen, especially on a cardio deficit...and without male levels of testosterone...

Body pump is a great class. I do not consider it weight lifting though, it's more like cardio with light weights since you do a ton of reps over and over and therefore have to reduce your weight. Anyway, I think it is a lot of fun and can burn lots of calories.
  • I initially felt the exact way you do. I was completely hesitant about starting the class for fear of bulking up but now, I do body pump and I love it. Its a light weight lifting class which focuses on using lighter weight with more repetitions vice heavier weights with shorter repetitions. I go to classes st 24 hr fitness and I love them. So much so I was going every day which I just learned YOU SHOULD NOT DO. It incorporates a barbell as well as hand weights to work, well, the entire body. I am going for long lean toned muscles and I think this class will help achieve just that.

Great class. You wont bulk up. Go to it.
  • I bloody love it. Feel awesome after and no extra bulk from it.
  • I take body pump 3 times a week, and would recommend it to any and everyone! You'll be amazed how much stronger you get after just a few weeks. You'll be sore after the first class, so make yourself go to a few before you decide whether or not you like it!
  • I have been doing body pump for 10 + years!!! It is amazing and they have new programs coming out all the time! So worth it! That is how I got lean!

How in shape should you be to try it? I go to the Y and I see they offer it, but it's listed as an intermediate class, and so I've been hesitant to try it since I've only been working out for about 3 weeks.

I do it three times a week. It's a great way to get some resistance training in. It tones you up - but you won't bulk up, I promise. I love it.

You can go and just lift the bar and work your way up! If the instructor is any good they will help you modify! I highly recommend!!

the class I take has people of all fitness levels. We have some guys in it that look to be fairly strong/fit, we have some overweight, some really super skinny, all kinds. I wouldn't stress about being 'in shape' before you go. For your first class, I would stick to light weights so you get a feel for how hard/easy it will be, and then you can always add more weight to the exercises you thought were too easy the next time you go until you reach a happy medium of challenging yourself without killing yourself.

Yep, as an instructor I think it's weird that the Y has it listed as intermediate, you can definitely do it as a beginner. Show up a few minutes early and snag the instrutor to ask for tips. They should then help you set up a bar and go over some proper positioning before each track. Our bars are only 2.5 pounds, I usually have noobs put 2.5 pound weights on each end for starters and let their bodies do the talking the next day. You should be sore the next day if you're not used to it, just keep moving to warm things back up again. You shouldn't do this class twice in one day or even two days in a row, every other is recommended. If you have any specific needs or injuries let the instrutor know so that they can provide modifications.

I've heard great things about it, too, and also understand that they are developing an at-home DVD version. Allabtm, have you heard anything about that?

Yes, it's being released through BeachBody. I can't remember when the official release date is though.

I've been curious about this class at my 24hr. I want to start doing some weight training, but I don't really know how to start. This sounds like a good idea :)
