Water retention

I apologise for another arsy post from me, I just want to raise something that crops up on here constantly.
So far according to posts on here things that cause you to water retain:
Too much sodium
Not enough salt
Too many carbs
Exercise
Not drinking enough water (???)
Grains
Not sleeping enough
Any more anyone wants to add? I have serious doubts about the validity of any of those statements. Especially the first two completely contradictory ones.

I think carbs can cause it and its usually wheat in particular for people who have wheat sensitivities. I have experimented with this thee are my personal results:
June: i would fluctuate daily by 4-6lbs, monthlies 6lb + (often around 10) .. took first 3 months to lose 9lb.. still including carbs in diet.
August went gluten free/low carb.. first few weeks strictly... lost 7lbs first week.. daily water retention reduced to 1 lb, then another 1 lb next day if hadn't been to bathroom.. monthlies reduced to 4lb water an came off alot quicker.
Now allow gluten free bread 1-2 times a week, potatoes OR rice once a week, Rice Krispies, Oats or Fruit with Yoghurt for breakfast, salad or soup for lunch. as wanted a diet I could stick to... I allow chocolate one week a month to satisfy my cravings. allow a treat meal once a week.
My daily water retention is still low if I stick to this.
When I've increased exercise significantly I do put more water on so have to plan to end exercise sessions a few days before weigh-in so can get the extra water off before weigh-in.0 -

And, don't forget, you can't lose weight unless you cut out black pepper!0 -
Health issues, pregnancy, and having a menstrual cycle can cause you to retain water.0

Green tea is good for water retention. Try that.0
