Snacks to eat during a long run

I picked up a few things to try for an energy boost for when I do my long runs (over an hour).

Powerbar Energy Blast gels and some of the GoGo SqueeZ Apple Sauce pouches.

I'm trying to experiment with food to eat in prep for my half marathons. Gotta be easy to transport, easy to open and consume, and also easily digestable. I've tried Clif Bars as well, but those are a little harder to eat while running, and I found them to sit a little weird in my stomach while running (and needing a lot of water to wash them down).

What do other people use?

I used a Clif Bar and a package of Gatorade G Series Bites before my 15K race earlier this month, and then a couple Clif Shot Bloks midway through the run.

I used to use tootsie rolls - easy to carry.

These days I stick to Clif Bloks.

You don't need to worry that much about eating during a half, as you won't be out there long enough to deplete your glycogen stores.

I've not actually used any specific products but have used jelly beans which I found too chewy and sugar crashes. Currently I run with almonds which I much prefer but only use them if I'm running longer that 10 miles.

I've found that I tend to start getting a little sluggish around mile 7 without a mid-run boost.

During the long runs that I've done recently, i haven't felt like i've been totally zonked of energy, but a little bit of something midway through has seemed to help me not feel too exhausted at the end. I'm interesting in getting something small to eat about 15-30 minutes before (since i usually do my long runs first thing in the morning)

how long we talking about? the longest i've run is 9 miles, and i wasn't famished. i can't imagine stopping for a granola bar. i've heard about those Gel packs though, supposed to be easy to squit in your mouth with just some water.

Yeah, I'm talking about anything over an hour, so like 7miles and up. And I'm talking about something small to eat on the run (not stopping to eat)

i tried the gel packs when i was training for a marathon and i had a serious problem with the texture...i gagged! the tiny cliff bars worked for me, pinned them to my shorts and they are only a couple of bites. during a race, a spectator handed me a piece of hard candy and it was the best thing i ever had!
