I like doing the arc trainer at the gym, they have different settings and I usually pick the strength mode, which works in resistance and incline. My legs are a whole lot stronger, I don't think it does too much for your upper body, but cardio and leg strength are definately improved.

60 minutes is enough to do both. I do 20 minutes HIIT (you can google for good HIIT programs - you could do it on the ellipitical) and about 20 minutes of upper or lower body strength training. Then I do another 5 intense minutes on treadmill and a 5 minute cooldown. That is 50 minutes.

The cardio will help you lose weight faster, but you will need the strength training to "firm up" since you are looking to lose 50 lbs. You need to find a routine that gives you both. I would suggest investing in a few sessions with a trainer that can help you figure out what to do with the time you have available.
  • I would suggest circuit training. I would pick 6 to 8 exercises to do with either weights(such as deadlifts) or body weight(such as push ups), do 10 to 12 reps of each exercise without any breaks between exercises. After you finish the very last exercise in your circuit then rest a few minutes, repeat the entire routine 3 or 4 times. With this method you are using weights to stimulate muscles but also keeping your heart rate up for cardio work. Search around on the internet for a routine just to get an idea how to structure it. Just as with any workout routine you may have to tweak things a bit to suit your fitness level and goals. Good luck!!!
