Boxed BANANA BREAD = Diabetes

Does anyone have any good home made banana bread recipies that are low in sugar? I alway buy the boxed stuff and the sugar in ONE small slice is 28 grams! I LOVE banana bread and don't want to give it up, but 28 grams is way too much to sacrifice for ONE slice! With that much sugar, I am suprised I didn't get diabetes before I started MFP! I used to eat half a loaf in one sitting!

Any ideas?

OR, do you have any great low sugar, recipes for any other holiday treats?

Sugar doesn't cause diabetes. I normally don't worry about it this time of year. If you google low sugar banana bread I'm sure you'll find something.

I have a predisposition to it because my father has it and it runs in our family. Sugar can contribute to diabetes because sugar in high quantities contributes to obesity and obesity can lead to diabetes. Having a round tire shape in your mid section is a common feature. It's not the ONLY thing that causes or is a tell tale sign of diabetes, but it definetely has a part in it, and I was definetely a sugar addict...Mt.Dew, Cookies, Chocolate, Candy Bars...oh yeah and I was definetely headed there like my dad......

There are tons of recipes out there, but I am hoping for some recommendations from members here because some of the healthier options out there taste like cardboard and if it is good enough to recommend then I definetely want to try it :)
  • i just made hungry girl's top banana bread recipe and it turned out yummy! the only change i made was putting 2 tbsp mini semi sweet choc chips in and i also made it into 12 muffins instead of a bread pan so i had individual ready to go treats. i only had to cook my muffins 25 minutes.

    Go Bananas!

Banana bread typically has pretty horrific nutritionals, so we set out to create a guilt-free version. And (tada!) here it is.

    Ingredients:
    1 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup Splenda No Calorie Sweetener (granulated)
1 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3 bananas)
1/2 cup fat-free liquid egg substitute (like Egg Beaters)
    1/2 cup no-sugar-added applesauce
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. salt
Optional Toppings: no-calorie spray butter, Cool Whip Free

    Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine both types of flour, Splenda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (in other words, all dry ingredients). In a separate bowl, mix together the mashed bananas, egg substitute, applesauce, and vanilla extract (all the wet ingredients). Add this mixture to the bowl with the dry ingredients, and stir until just blended. Spoon batter into a large loaf pan (about 9" X 5") sprayed with nonstick spray. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Allow to cool slightly, and then cut into 8 slices. If you like, spritz with some spray butter or spread on some Cool Whip Free. MAKES 8 SERVINGS

    Sugar doesn't cause diabetes.

    Yes it does.
  • I am diabetic and sugar does not cause you to become a diabetic at all yes it runs in family's but sugar is not the cause of it at all
  • Sounds good I will try that one. Thanks for sharing
  • Perhaps you can use a sugar substitute.

I have had good luck just reducing the amount of sugar called for in a recipie.

Also, I would't discount the link between sugar consumption and type II diabeties or insulin resistance. There is a significant school of thought that sugar and other refined carbs increase the risk of diabeties. Some people with either pre-diabetes or diabetes control their blood sugar by eating low carb.

    Sugar doesn't cause diabetes.

    Yes it does.

What causes diabetes to occur is an ineffective and/or inefficient pancreas. Another words a pancreas that is not able to do it's job for whatever the reason!!! Sugar in and of itself, does not cause diabetes. And sugar does not make your pancreas fail.

You're thinking of type 1. type 2 occurs when you're too fat and your body can't handle the large quantity of flesh it needs to maintain at stable insulin/ blood sugar levels.

The key word being 'reasonable', which obviously differs from person to person.

The American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association probably have some great low sugar recipes on their website. There's a recipe thread here as well and a search may yield some delicious banana bread recipes.

Boxed banana bread is sacrilegious anyway. Hope you got your answer 'cause I think you can see where this thread is heading.

I suppose, but the individual is responsible for their own choices. I know I can't live on chicken and broccoli without going nuts and eating a case of snack cakes. So I eat what I feel like and more often than not it is chicken and broccoli lol... I just do my best to stay within my calories. Maybe one day ever other week I go over.

Google low-fat banana bread recipes, bear in mind that a whole banana gets you to 2 servings of carbs in diabetes land(about 30g).
Then make an appointment with a good internal medicine specialist, and speak with him about your concerns, especially with your genetics.
There's enough misinformation on this string to sink a ship.

    Except those recipe links.

You're thinking of type 1. type 2 occurs when you're too fat and your body can't handle the large quantity of flesh it needs to maintain at stable insulin/ blood sugar levels.

And what produces insulin? THE PANCREAS.
While not everyone with type 2 diabetes is overweight, obesity and lack of physical activity are two of the most common causes of this form of diabetes.
People with diabetes either don't make insulin or their body's cells no longer are able to recognize insulin, leading to high blood sugars.

Type 2 Diabetes is caused by insulin resistance. The main cause is obesity, which is associated with diets high in sugar. Arguing over whether sugar is a direct or indirect cause is silly.

Oh the irony! Funny considering that you're the champion of unsubstantiated BS.

Personal attacks are not the way to defend your position, evidence is.

I agree that sugar contributes to diabetes because it contributes to a caloric surplus, causing obesity. Not all diabetics are obese, but it increases risk for sure. Given that there is a family history for the OP, reducing sugar can't hurt regardless of its effects.

That's the kind my family has and everyone that has it became obese before they were diagnosed with it. I was pre diabetic and once I started cutting out sugar and fast food and lost weight, my labs all came back normal :) Hallelujah!

My nose is running, that must be what caused the cold I have.

Insulin resistance is actually caused by excess fatty acids in the blood stream (due to excess fat, and overfilled fat cells,) not sugar. An inability to process sugar is a symptom of diabetes, not the cause of diabetes.

This is what I meant by it. I posted the topic title because I thought it was funny. I do believe that sugar has a relationship with diabetes though through obesity and in large quantities in not healthy. I saw a neuropath on Thursday and she wants me to cut out all sugar that isn't from fruit but Im having a hard time doing it. I never cooked in my early 20s which is partially why I got fat because take out and fast food were so much more convenient for me. I didn't even know how to make banana bread before this thread so I am happy that I got some good suggestions and recipes! I love the egg beater suggestion! Thank You for all that had great recommendations! There are so many recipes out there and I thought y'all would have some good recommendations for a few that didn't taste like cardboard. Lol Thank You all so much! I appreciate it!
