Does anyone have any good home made banana bread recipies that are low in sugar? I alway buy the boxed stuff and the sugar in ONE small slice is 28 grams! I LOVE banana bread and don't want to give it up, but 28 grams is way too much to sacrifice for ONE slice! With that much sugar, I am suprised I didn't get diabetes before I started MFP! I used to eat half a loaf in one sitting!
Any ideas?

Sugar doesn't cause diabetes. I normally don't worry about it this time of year. If you google low sugar banana bread I'm sure you'll find something.0

I have a predisposition to it because my father has it and it runs in our family. Sugar can contribute to diabetes because sugar in high quantities contributes to obesity and obesity can lead to diabetes. Having a round tire shape in your mid section is a common feature. It's not the ONLY thing that causes or is a tell tale sign of diabetes, but it definetely has a part in it, and I was definetely a sugar addict...Mt.Dew, Cookies, Chocolate, Candy Bars...oh yeah and I was definetely headed there like my dad......
There are tons of recipes out there, but I am hoping for some recommendations from members here because some of the healthier options out there taste like cardboard and if it is good enough to recommend then I definetely want to try it0 -
i just made hungry girl's top banana bread recipe and it turned out yummy! the only change i made was putting 2 tbsp mini semi sweet choc chips in and i also made it into 12 muffins instead of a bread pan so i had individual ready to go treats. i only had to cook my muffins 25 minutes.

Banana bread typically has pretty horrific nutritionals, so we set out to create a guilt-free version. And (tada!) here it is.
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup Splenda No Calorie Sweetener (granulated)
1 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3 bananas)
1/2 cup fat-free liquid egg substitute (like Egg Beaters)
1/2 cup no-sugar-added applesauce
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
Optional Toppings: no-calorie spray butter, Cool Whip Free
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine both types of flour, Splenda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (in other words, all dry ingredients). In a separate bowl, mix together the mashed bananas, egg substitute, applesauce, and vanilla extract (all the wet ingredients). Add this mixture to the bowl with the dry ingredients, and stir until just blended. Spoon batter into a large loaf pan (about 9" X 5") sprayed with nonstick spray. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Allow to cool slightly, and then cut into 8 slices. If you like, spritz with some spray butter or spread on some Cool Whip Free. MAKES 8 SERVINGS

Sodium: 267mg
Carbs: 31g
Fiber: 3.75g
Sugars: 7g

I am diabetic and sugar does not cause you to become a diabetic at all yes it runs in family's but sugar is not the cause of it at all0

I have had good luck just reducing the amount of sugar called for in a recipie.
Also, I would't discount the link between sugar consumption and type II diabeties or insulin resistance. There is a significant school of thought that sugar and other refined carbs increase the risk of diabeties. Some people with either pre-diabetes or diabetes control their blood sugar by eating low carb.0 -

What causes diabetes to occur is an ineffective and/or inefficient pancreas. Another words a pancreas that is not able to do it's job for whatever the reason!!! Sugar in and of itself, does not cause diabetes. And sugar does not make your pancreas fail.0 -

use a sugar substitute like splenda and substitute apple sauce for oil! Voila! and add walnuts because they're yummy and good for you0

You're thinking of type 1. type 2 occurs when you're too fat and your body can't handle the large quantity of flesh it needs to maintain at stable insulin/ blood sugar levels.0 -

The American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association probably have some great low sugar recipes on their website. There's a recipe thread here as well and a search may yield some delicious banana bread recipes.0 -

Personally I eat whatever I want and just try to have reasonable portions.
I suppose, but the individual is responsible for their own choices. I know I can't live on chicken and broccoli without going nuts and eating a case of snack cakes. So I eat what I feel like and more often than not it is chicken and broccoli lol... I just do my best to stay within my calories. Maybe one day ever other week I go over.0 -

Google low-fat banana bread recipes, bear in mind that a whole banana gets you to 2 servings of carbs in diabetes land(about 30g).
Then make an appointment with a good internal medicine specialist, and speak with him about your concerns, especially with your genetics.
There's enough misinformation on this string to sink a ship.
