Hello all,
I am a 38 year old stay at home mom with a pretty active lifestyle. However, I have been on a pattern of gaining weight since the birth of my 4th child 9 years ago. I was always pretty much at my goal weight prior to that and then, bam, my body went to crap!! I did not really change my diet or lifestyle, but none the less, the pounds have just continued to stack up. I need help!! I have tried diets before, but no luck. Since my weight has gotten to be 200 lbs., I am having terrible problems with my knees and ankles, which makes it very hard to excercise. I was also diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease which creates its own set of problems with my energy level. I am just looking for any pointers or advice as I start on this journey...once again. I always get so frustrated, because I watch what I eat, try to stay active and I don't lose any weight. I usually gain weight!! I feel like I am just stuck in this body, no matter what I do. I am going to start going to the gym and pray that I can find some exercises that my body can handle, as well as watch what I eat and drink more water. Hopefully this site will keep me motivated and I know it will help to be accountable for the amount of food I put in my body. I have started logging today, even though I am not officially starting my diet until Monday. it will be interesting to see the changes taking place in my diet plan. Praying for strength and knowledge...

  • Try starting with stretches and short walks, multiple times a day for exercise. If you have access to an indoor pool that is one of the best non-impact ways to exercise! Tracking what I eat has been a HUGE help to me. I was thinking my diet was 'ok'. If I ate candy or something, I had the tiny bite size ones and like you, I was always busy. The problem was I was eating 12-15 of those bite size candies a day and didn't realize it! And all those errands I run, don't really burn any extra calories. This site said I needed no more than 35g of sugar a day. I upped that to 50 and still sometimes go over. Prior to my changes I was taking in about 150-180g a day!!! And I honestly just never realized it! I find I read all the labels now! I eat a lot of 'light' soups, low-fat protein and some lean cuisines. Even having some 'cheat' days I'm doing better than I did before. So I hope you find the support you need here! I'll be happy to help when/where I can. :-)

I would say gentle exercise. When I started my journey I was over 300 and started by using the Wii Fit Plus because it is gentle. I'll send you an invite to be friends.
  • I find my biggest challenge was finding time to exercise with 4 kids. However, if you have access to a gym a stationary bike would be low impact and burns a good amount of calories. Also an eliptical trainer is made for this purpose. It is designed to take the impact off your joints. You need to do enough to get your heart rate up. I started at 225lbs in August & am 168lbs now. Also, if you don't have a gym walking outside is a good one. I say outside because if I try to excercise in the house I get bored and lazy. Not to meantion the kids are constantly yelling "Mommy". Make a point, at least 5 days a week, to take an hour for yourself. Walk at a pace that pushes your body above the normal pace. If your knees start to ache, stop for a minute and start again.
