Peanut Butter - Should I remove the oil?

Hey everyone!
I have developed the absurd habit of going through a 750 g jar of natural PB every week (I do P90X so I've been able to at least maintain my weight) all by myself. I just opened another jar this morning and considered pouring out the oils that accumulate at the surface. I know they're healthy peanut oils and whatnot, but since I eat so much of it, would you recommend removing it just to cut down some of the fat/calories?

All suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance guys!

    I would not, you should stir it in, if not once you get to the bottom the texture will no longer be smooth, it will be dry and very hard to spread.

    I've thought of doing that too (I often do it with pesto and salad dressing!) but as someone before me said, it won't be stir-able or spreadable if you do that, so I wouldn't!! :)

    Maybe you could remove just a little bit.... a couple tablespoons?

A peanut farm in Georgia makes it. It is made by Bell Plantation. It has like 85% fewer fat calories than regular peanut butter and no preservatives.

    If you love peanut butter so much, you might want to consider PB2. It is a powdered peanut butter that when added with water, tastes and feels just like real peanut butter. A peanut farm in Georgia makes it. It is made by Bell Plantation. It has like 85% fewer fat calories than regular peanut butter and no preservatives.

    I have the same problem with peanut butter. LOVE it and have it every day in something. I need to check out that PB2. Like someone already said, I wouldn't pour the oil off. Just mix it up really good or it will be so hard and dry it won't spread on anything.

    My husband showed me that shaking the new can really hard helps it to stir up good. Some brands mix easier than others.

    I learned on here a long time ago that if you buy peanut butter that needs to be mixed, you should store the jar upside down. No need for mixing or anything. Works like a charm. :smile:

    I actually have PB2 (both regular and chocolate) lol. I use it sometimes but it doesn't always satisfy my snacking needs because it's not really filling, plus I prefer the taste of the natural PB. And I don't mind if the PB isn't 100% spreadable because I often eat it straight out of the jar with a butter knife :P

    I think I will just pour our SOME of the oil. Thanks again pals!
  • Hello friend. First off I agree with the people who recommended PB2. It's a great product. However draining the excess oil off the top of natural peanut butter really won't effectthe consistency greatly. Afterwards, like some said, the peanut butter will be a little less pliable, but it has about the consistency of reduced fat peanut butter, which is in fact peanut butter although they add many unwanted processed ingredients to that. My point I'm trying to make is I was curious one day and for my own edification, I tried to replicate what bell plantation had did with their PB except on a more economical and practical scale. What you can do, yet it takes time and can be expensive, is continually add paper towels to the top of the jar making sure the towel is in contact with the peanut butter. Over time and a few dozen changes of towels, they begin to draw the oil out of the mixture. After a while it will become maleable. This is when I take it out of the jar;( it has the consistency of about play dough) and flYten the lump of peanut butter using a rolling pin or something of the like. Lay the piece on the paper towels. I then continue the whole paper towel process but less frequently. Soon enough it will have drawn virtually all oil possible out of the paste and now it is like a hard brick. Now you can break it up using a meat tenderizer or something similar and voila! Yo have your own homemade PB2 which yoj can add any liquid to and blend to the desired consistency. I am not sure of the calorie/ fat content of the "powder" or if it contains more or less fat that PB2. but i think its fun to do.A suggestion if you are going to do this is to only use natural peanut butter b/c the other varieties contain cottonseed, rapseed oil, etc. Which retard the process. I am sure many will reply ridiculing how wasteful this is, it's not worth the effort, waste of time, etc. Like i said however, it does require time and a significant amount of paper towels. Yet, if you are like me though and don't mind doing tedious things such as this than it is a neat past time. What i do is either just add tge powder directly to my protein shave or mix in a blender with sugar free maple syrup, it tastes pretty damn food if i dont say so myself! :D . If you actually read my whole story I hope I opened a new perspective to you whether you agree with my methods or not :) just ideas

    the best thing to learn is that the fat from peanut butter or other nuts ( peanuts are not even nuts like almond and pastaccios) is that our body not only needs this "fat" but this fat helps us perforn better. When we perform better we burn calories better. Please do not be afraid of "fat"". Fat calories do not make us fat. Too many calories make us fat. Stay acftive. Eat real food, including peanuts.

    WTF people recommending a inferior product? That oil is damn good for your body and you sure as hell need it to get lean and healthy...I mix it in and enjoy a few tablespoons a day.
  • Does anyone know if Smuckers Organic Natural Peanut Butter is okay. I'm on a no sugar diet but I allow myself the occasional tsp of PB. It says only 1 gram of sugar. The lightest one they had. Hope I get a reply. :)

    My peanut butter always separates since its just squashed nuts (nothing added, not even other oils or sugars), wouldnt think of wasting the oil!

    I find Cashew butter irresistible though :(

    I like PB2 for lots of things, but you are fooling yourself and everyone else if you say it tastes and feels like real peanut butter!

    I eat peanut butter every single day! I love it. It is my super healthy treat. I use either Smuckers natural creamy pb which only has peanuts and salt or Meijer Naturals crunchy which only has peanuts. It is not bad for you at all. Packed with healthy fat and protein.

    I love Trader Joe's natural peanut butter. It's just nuts and salt. Stir it up and it's creamy and delicious!!

    Store your PB upside down! Make sure your lid is on tight ;)


    PB2 is for those people who can't afford the calories of real PB but don't want to give it up. It's good for baking too.
    Nothing is as good as real PB but for those who don't want to waste 190 calories on 2 spoonfuls.... they can have PB2 for 45 calories. It's good for breakfast with a banana no matter what kind you use!

    I always get natural nut butters that have to be mixed - thanks for the inverted trick--never thought of doing that.

    I poured the oil out and added some water. Just can't see myself eating 25% of my daily fat calories in one sitting. Need to save those for my butter addiction. Tastes the same to me.

    If you have a Whole Foods or something comparable nearby, go in and grind your own PB. I usually get a pound once a week, and because I eat it within the week, the oil doesn't separate and I don't have to deal with that.

    I found replacing it with Peanut Flour mixed with almond milk isn't a bad substitution. Peanut Flour is like PB2 except it doesn't have added salt/sugar & the protein amount is higher (:

    Hijacking sorry OP...besides the caloric reduction what is the advantage seems it reduces the iron content to 0 and the protein content. A little added sugar.

    I would never remove the oil, but hypothetically, if I removed 1 TBSP from the jar, could I consider it "peanut oil" that was removed, and subtract 120 cals from the jar?

    Nice. Simple, effective solution. (Maybe a tad more expensive, but hey.)
