Am I the only one that thinks nuts are not good sources of protein? Fat, yes! Fiber, sometimes! But their protein to calorie ratio does not seem to qualify them as a "good" source of protein.

I've often thought the same thing. I love nuts but the amount of protein you get in what is considered a serving is all out of proportion to the calories. But I eat them anyway cause they are yummy.

Don't get me wrong! I eat them, too - but to hit fat and/or fiber macros... never to hit protein.

I think that whatever they were feeding the nuts before they are slaughtered has a lot to do with it.

I think people use the protein as an excuse to get more nuts in their mouth.
  • Almonds has the fat that is good for your heart, so beneficial to you.

Yeah I eat almonds pretty much daily, and I view them as a fat source primarily, the protein is negligible in my overall diet but is a little added bonus.

I prefer my nuts roasted and lightly salted. The perfect blend of mmmmm and ahhhhhh.

I wouldn't eat nuts as a source of protein but for many qualities. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts — you name it — almost every type of nut has a lot of nutrition packed into a tiny package. For heart health, eating nuts instead of a less healthy snack can help you more easily follow a diet.

As a protein source, I can think of better options, so I hear ya...

I usually eat nuts and seeds for their micronutrients, especially b vitamins and iron

I don't need any excuse to get nuts in my mouth.

And I agree, they are NOT a good source of protein. I consider them a fat. I happily eat several hundred cals worth every day.

Yeah, I had a friend (V_V) and we discussed this. I will, however, use the protein in nuts as an excuse to pimp out Justin's Nut butter (justinsnutbutter.com) whenever possible. I'm only a little sorry.

I usually choose nuts when I'm low on calories for the day and I need a calorie dense food -- better than picking up a candy bar i'm sure. ;)

depending on other macros for the day that may not actually be the case

I agree with the OP. Nuts are a terrible primary source of protein. Good for reaching fat minimums though.
