Foot surgery

Sometime after the new year I'm going to have to cave and see the doctor about my foot.
While pregnant I developed a bunion on my my left foot.
Then when my daughter was a little over a year old she opened up our screen door and I lunged for her to stop her from going outside and KICKED a bowling ball with equisite force.
My foot has progessively gotten worse and there are times that the pain will shoot up my foot into my ankle.
I'm scared that they'll tell me I need surgery and I'll be laid up for a while.
Anyone ever have this kind of surgery or foot surgery in general and how long did it take to heal?

Everyone is different, healing time is different because every person is different.

It really depends on how compliant you are on doing what you are told by the doctors for your post-surgical recovery.

You really should be taking this question to your doctors because, this is not a medical forum overseeing your individual medical care. Only those doctors know about your medical situation, your xrays, treatments and they are the ones who can guide you....

The woman who does my hair just had both of her bunions operated on, and she could walk after a couple of days, and didn't even need painkillers. She does have to wear Crocs for a couple of months, though.
  • I had bunion surgery on both feet at the same time several years ago. (I have no kids!). It was the best thing I ever did. I think there are a couple of different types of surgery. A friend had it done and they had post sticking out of her feet after and then removed them later. She had nothing but problems. My Dr. cut the bones and re-arranged them, then screwed them back together. I did have to have a screw removed later but it was not a big deal. Good Luck!

My friend is having this surgery in January. She has been told she will not be able to put any weight on the front of her foot for 6 weeks. She will be able to move around only putting weight on the heel. good luck it's different for everyone.
  • I just had my right foot done in November. It had a bunion and a break from a previous injury. I was only totally laid up for about a week... After that I could walk on it for short distances but it hurt to stand on it too much. I was allowed to walk on it immediately after surgery but because of pain the first three days I just laid around. After that I chose to lay around to shorten healing time. Now it's been 5 weeks? I forget I even had the surgery unless I do something stupid like jog on it. I'm back in normal shoes and normal activity. It doesn't quite have full range of motion yet but it didn't before surgery either so I don't notice.

Obviously I'm not 100% healed yet. I don't plan on doing any serious physical activity (running, sports) on it until the spring. But it's been a really great decision. Even when I get pain it's different than what it was before surgery when it would throb for hours.

Oh and for my surgery they cut and rearranged the bones and screwed them together. The screw is permanant though so I don't have to go back and get it removed. I didn't even have to get stitches removed. For the break I had, since it was such a small bone they just took out the smaller section and left the rest. No setting or anything.
