Any tips for avoiding holiday goodies at work/parties?

I have NO willpower when it comes to snacks in the workplace. I was feeling SO great today...I ate a great breakfast and lunch plus I worked out for an hour. Then I went to work and my co-worker had a huge plate full of chocolate covered pretzels she made and then someone else brought in another huge bowl full of puppy chow. I know, I should allow myself to enjoy one or two bites. Which I did, but what about the other 20 bites I ate? What is wrong with me, and why can't I just tell myself NO, you can't eat all that? So I just feel like my day went to waste. The good thing is, I think I am still under my calorie goal for the day. However, I still don't feel very good about the choices I made.

Any tips on how to avoid all the holiday goodies? Or enjoy them in moderation?

I SO Understand this issue.. I had 3 parties at work yesterday. It was so bad that when I'd say no, others would push me to eat the things I knew I shouldn't! It was horrible.. Then this morning I walk in to my office FULL of Chocolate- Gifts for me from Co-Workers! I hate to give them away and have been sitting here for an hour now eyeing on box of chocolates.. not to mention the Tower of Treats! UGH

Holidays are really the toughest time! Most of us have hard days without all these temptations! lol

Overall, the advice I've seen is to bring your own food.. something healthy. Fruit or Veggies! But it's hard when you literally are slammed into the treats lol Unexpected!!

    Good Luck and Stay Strong!!!

    You said it... avoid! :-)

also... I am doing TWO A DAYS until after the HOLIDAYS. :) you are welcome to join me... i am encouraging anyone i know who wants to stay on track.... this way we can at least burn a little extra, even if we do indulge a bit. Here are the deets:

In order to get myself into a "groove" of being more "on it" and helping me to burn all those extra calories I consume(d) during the Holidays, I am going to COMMIT to TWO workouts a day until January 1st. I will take one rest day per week, but otherwise I will workout for a minimum of 30 minutes at a time TWICE per day...

The average person gains weight this time of year. Let's beat the odds and LOSE!!!!!!

Wanna join me? Let's keep each other accountable.

Holidays are definitely the toughest times. I teach in an elementary school, where the standard is to bring teachers lots of chocolate--my partner says this has been the worst year yet, and it's the year when I am focusing the most on losing weight! In terms of gifts, I will sometimes regift things like chocolate, or take them to relatives' houses over the holidays. When it comes to parties, I will use a *small* plate, put a few things on it, and only allow myself to eat that plate. I have issues with overeating, but I try to plan holiday parties into my eating (I was really careful with what I had for b'fast and lunch and calculated in my drinks-two martinis-before hitting the party). And if things don't go as well as I would like them to, I pick myself up the next day and move on. Life's too short to obsess over one day and as long as I am still in a mode of weight loss and getting fit, I allow myself the little splurges now and then. Hope this helps!!

    Or enjoy them in moderation?

I'd try to learn this habit, or come to terms with what happens when you overeat at times (which again, is a form of moderation if you're "occasionally" going over your calorie intake).

I think learning moderation is key, and I also think learning to deal with acceptance and your feelings about food when you DO go over, will help you in the long run to establish a better relationship with food.

You shouldn't beat yourself up over pretzels.

honestly, don't even pick it up! chew a piece of gum at the start of a party. be conscious of what you're doing. log your calories. don't give yourself permission to eat a lot of stuff. counting what you eat keeps you accountable. you might feel bad about it the next day, but i'm sure you will learn and not give yourself permission to do it again. remember that no one forces you to eat food. you are in control of what you eat.

ps - if you say you will have 20 pretzels, stick with that number. if you say 1 cookie, eat 1 cookie... etc... just stay in control.
