"You are looking well"

Is it just me or do others automatically think omg they think I have gained weight???!!!!

I guess having previously been underweight and then got back to health, hearing it then has meant that when I hear it now I associate it with weight gain!

In situations like that I usually think, "oh, he/she must think I am looking well."

I know people say that stuff to be nice and as a compliment....I'll give them that....they are trying to be nice... However, I hate when people say "OMG!!!!!!!! You've lost a TON of weight!!!". Thanks... actually a TON is a 1000lbs..... I've lost 20lb. Thanks
  • My dad hadn't seen me in a few weeks and he told me I looked healthy. As in - you've gained a few , lol. Wasn't to happy about that one!

I hear ya on that one. I've lost 20 and the way people act I've gone from HUGE to skinny... Then they start with , "but you're fine now, you don't need to lose any more." I wish people would just let each other be. I admit I like the way losing weight makes me look, but I'm also in it for the sake of easing the burden on my joints, reducing my risk of diabetes and all that jazz. Plus... I'm a bit older and some bits don't actually look that great deflated LOL. So yeah... hush everyone...

I've had people say this to me and I stop and wonder "Did I look sickly before?" or I'll wonder if they're just being friendly and really do think I look well.

I don't know. I've given up trying to figure out what people mean when they say certain things.

i've gotten the whole, "wow you've lost sooo much weight" thing at work on several occasions.. While I've lost a decent amount, I also haven't gone from one extreme to the next. People will say, oh you look so great now, you look so pretty, etc.. and all it makes me think is, ok I know I was overweight, but apparently I looked a lot more horrible than I thought.. thanks!

I can understand your concern if they say "you've put on some weight " or "wow, look at you" but I think you can relax with "you are looking well" and say thanks! They probably mean just that, " you are looking well".

With my weight being on a downward trajectory, I love hearing "you are looking well", I take it as polite speak for "you've lost weight" :-D

Take a deep breath. It is a compliment. If you cannot take criticism or a compliment we all have a problem here.
