Is anyone else sick of hearing those words or "so you still eat that do you?"
I have not really told anyone about my lifestyle change but its become quite obvious I have lost weight. So now all of a sudden people think they have the right to tell me what I can and can't eat. For a start I'm not on a diet for me its about everything in moderation and not depriving myself of things as I want to do this for life.
So if I want some cake I'm going to have some and I don't want anyone telling me that I can't. Just because I've lost weight doesn't mean I have to live on rabbit food for the rest of my life. Plus where were these people when I was at my biggest to tell me I shouldn't be eating things?
Sorry for the rant it just really gets on my nerves!

YUP I hear it EVERYDAY from my hubby...Oh but you are on a diet...I say NO im not LOL Drives me MAD!0

It seems weird that they know you've lost weight so you obviously know what you're doing...? But they still feel like they know better...
Just ignore them, you're doing great without their "advice" :happy:0 -
Exactly if you are anything like me you asked for help over and over and noone would listen so when you finally get to your biggest are just can't handle it and you do it all by your self suddenly they start acting concerned acting as if they were worried all along when they did the exact opposite. The best way to handle that is there is nothing that you can't eat. Telling yourself you can't have something just sets you up for a disaster. Because all you are gunna want is that if you tell yourself you can't have it. My way of thinking is" You can have anything you want just in Moderation!" You don't have to stop having anything. You just can't have too much!!0
-
You're right, everything in moderation. And you're doing great!0

I say "Watch me" then I wolf it down. I also like to ask people "Did you excercise today? This is how many calories I burned!" and then I show them my Polar HRM watch. That usually shuts them up. If that doesn't I announce how much weight I lost over the past year and ask how much they have lost.0
-
Totally in agreement. Drives me mad too!0

OH YEAH The "did you go to the gym today"? Gaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!0

Yepp, I hear it over and over again since it is obvious I've lost weight. Suddenly they wanna tell me what I can eat or not. And another question accompanies this " so you can eat that?" question.
It is the" don't you think you've lost enough" question, or: "don't get skinnier"... or..."but you should stop now"
Mind you, all this coming from friends with too many pounds on their hips. So I guess it's just jealousy. They even ask me if I wanted a *kitten* knowing I've quit for good weeks ago.
It's not funny any more
This morning my scale showed 149 for the first time ever. I am thrilled because I am in the healthy BMI range now and they say " too skinny". Rubbish, I am not. But it is frustrating. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to listen to such a bull.....t.
Let's exercise and be feeling good and shovel in the odd guilty pleasures. We deserve it.
Happy, healthy Xmas to all of you:drinker:0 -
"don't get skinnier"... or..."but you should stop now"0

i know exactly what you mean.. thats the best thing about logging everything.. you can see what you have left for fat, sugar, calories and if you have enough for a cake or biscuits then bloody do it!!
and as for people saying "you've lost enough now" its not enough until you say it is.. these people only say that because they haven't got the courage or determination to lose that much themselves.
Well done to everyone0 -
yep, i get that!
people seem to think you should eat a tiny portion of lettuce and nothing else, they dont get that I can have a big plate of food that is lower in calories than their small portion of chips / pizza etc!0 -
LOL, I complained about the exact same thing a while ago.
Human nature's a funny thing.
I think that when people say "you can't eat that" what they really mean is "how are you managing to lose weight when you're able to eat things like that?". The simple eat less, move more philosophy most MFPers use is totally alien to a lot of people, no doubt in part due to the weight loss industry and all the 'get slim quick' fad diets that rotate in and out of fashion. I was having a conversation with someone yesterday and when I told her all I'm doing is counting calories and exercising more she was really surprised. She said "oh, I've tried WW, Scottish Slimmers etc etc, but I've never just tried counting calories"
I also heard "don't get too skinny" yesterday.
It's a perception thing. These people have only known me fat and have watched me drop quite a lot of weight in the last year. Compared to last Xmas I *am* 'skinny', I'm just not actually skinny in the pejorative sense.
Keep up the good work OP.0 -
Hell yes!!
That annoys me too! I NEVER snack on rubbish at work like all my colleagues do - instead bringing fruit etc. The other day, I baked some cupcakes and took them in...and ate one. Everyone looked at me in horror like "OMG! But you don't eat junk, you're a carrot cruncher!" and "You're our skinny office chick, you can't eat cake!!" (While cramming my yummy cupcakes into their mouths!)
Umm...well, I'd been up since 5.30 and done a workout when they were all still in bed. I had a salad for lunch when they had sausage baguettes. I logged the damn cupcake and allowed for it in my daily intake - it was my indulgence and to deny yourself something you fancy all the time would lead to failiure because it's just not sustainable!!
People don't understand it's not all about eating salad 24/7 - it's the WHOLE lifestyle change that counts!0 -
Yes it is so annoying! I eat things like peanut butter (natural) and celery and people go "I can't believe you're eating peanut butter, aren't you on a diet" - "oh you're eating sugar, don't you know sugar makes you fat" .. I really hate this! I got into a heated debate with a coworker who told me sugar was why I was struggling with my weight (even though I have recently lost about 17lbs). I have lost a total of almost 80kg (176lbs) so I think I know what works for me and what doesn't!0
-
I used to work with a guy who was rather rude and would always laugh and make comments about that to me. I guess he felt I only ate healthy to lose weight for weigh-ins at work and would go back to old habits completely-like he does. Sometimes people just don't understand.0
-
I hear this allll the time! It is so annoying to me, especially since I don't consider it a "diet" at all. To me the word "diet" means a crazy fad diet that will never last. This is simply portion control and making healthier choices, nothing more, nothing less. I think most of the time (at least with my friends and family) they say it out of jealousy. It's like they feel like they finally have something to put me down for when it comes to my health and weight loss.0
-
Exactly.
I too and getting fed up of people telling me how "skinny" I'm looking, which then comes followed with a "Are you not eating?!'
Umm.... Yes. I love my food, I still eat what I want to eat, I just eat in moderation. Just because I won't have a whole chocolate bar, doesn't mean I'm not eating. It's now purely because I have weaned myself of eating the amount of chocolate I used too, that actually it just makes me feel sick. I still eat it every day, just a little bit.
And when people say 'What diet you following?' I'm not on a diet, its a lifestyle change. I just know where I can get more calories from by eating sensibly rather than going for the quick, calories loaded food that doesn't hit my hunger hole!
Why can't people just let you be. You lead your life how you want too, and I'll lead mine how I want too!!!! Grrrr...!0 -
YUP I hear it EVERYDAY from my hubby...Oh but you are on a diet...I say NO im not LOL Drives me MAD!
Yep - had a husband like that once - I was 72kg when I met him (I am 6ft so that is acceptable) and he used to look at everything I ate and would say 'are you sure you should be eating that?', very condescendingly. I ended up piling weight on over the years and feeling guilt about absolutely everything I put in my mouth. I now have shed 70kg of useless crap (him) and now am getting my mind and body back to normal by consuming what I want but with concessions and exercise.0 -
I'm the exact same way. I eat whatever I want whenever I want, and it's really annoying to hear **** like that. .-. I know if I cut everything out I'm just going to quit, so!0
-
I get that a lot when I'm shoveling down a steak and broccoli smothered in butter. Or half a block of cheese. Or chicken alfredo. Or any of the other awesome things I eat. =30

I've learned that diets don't work. You will gain the weight back and then some. I've seen it many times. It has to be a lifestyle change. You can NEVER go back to the old way. Don't fool yourself. One piece of cake is all it takes. Just like a recovering alcoholic can't have one drink or a heroin addict can't have one fix. Food addiction is the same.
I've lost 145 pounds in the past 21 months. I am now free from the addictions that I had before. I know I can never go back.
You can't cheat, if you cheat you lose. You will gain the weight back. Read my story on my blog.
