Toning: Where do I start?

Hey guys, I decided to stop losing for a while and work on toning...the problem is I don't really know what I am supposed to do.

I have no clue. My mom ordered Insanity for me as a present, but it isn't supposed to arrive until February. I live in a small dorm in Japan. I would prefer not to have to join a gym ^^ Otherwise, if there is an App or a website for toning...a special device I can buy...

I would like a toned body...specifically:

smaller waist
toned thighs and calves (not bulky or bigger...toned)
I would also like to work on making my boobs and butt a bit more perky and "tight"

I had a hard time finding photos...but maybe this is an idea of what I'm looking for ^^

imager.php?id=3256239&t=o

I am a little thinner than this girl right now...I wish I was toned like her...Any ideas what I can do to achieve this toned, fit appearance?

Thank you!!! :)

Strenght training is your friend. You wont get big or bulky, but you will tone and get stronger. Not sure where to tell you to begin though. Hopefully some of the lifting ladies will respond!

    this.

when most people say "toned" what they are really saying is that they want a lower body fat percentage and more muscles. trust me, you will not get bulky or be bulging out of your clothing. adults will not point and laugh at you in the street, and children will not run away from you crying.

the best way to achieve a "toned" look is to keep eating at a deficit and to start lifting. i advise cutting what ever loss per week you have (or had) in half, because you can do strength training on a deficit, and continue losing weight. you should up your protein intake to about 1g per pound of body weight.

dancers do not only dance for their bodys. they do a lot of working out with weights and cardio. many people can see a great benefit from a full body circuit when they start lifting. something like this was helpful to me in the beginning. http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/

have you heard about staci? you should totally read about staci, because she is awesome. http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/07/21/meet-staci-your-new-powerlifting-super-hero/

the most important thing is to be paitent. this will take time. i'm talking about like, a year of being disciplined and working hard. but it will be worth it.

I second the rec to read all about Staci/Spezzy. Super inspiring.

Also, New Rules of Lifting for Women is a great book to read on exactly how to lift.

I also super dig Nike Training Club, which is an app for the ipod touch or iphone: http://www.nike.com/nikewomen/features/howitworks?locale=en_US

I also like Nerd Fitness. Since your in a dorm room, I'm guessing that you're space limited. Here's a workout plan that is suitable. http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/03/10/angry-birds-workout-plan/

Do you live in a larger city or smaller town in Japan?

I lived in a rural-ish city on Shikoku and there was a great community center where you could pay 300 yen each time you went and exercise as long as you wanted. No membership, not expensive and decent equipment that you could use on your own schedule.

Might be worth looking into if you need something like that.

    Best of luck. Gambatte kudasai!

^ I am a dancer and can vouch for this. ^ Any athlete would probably agree that the sport (or the weight) is the goal, the fitness is just a great side effect of working THAT hard. I found the greatest improvement to my dancing came when I regularly started lifting. I had greater strength and stamina, difficult moves became easier and my leaps were higher. Being stronger became my motivation and again, the body was a side effect. Insanity is a great workout if you like dance type workouts. It reminded me of what we would to to condition for dance team or cheer leading. I'm also a big fan of yoga and pilates because (like dance) it works every muscle in your body at once. If you're not going to a gym, I'd recommend browsing you-tube for some plyometric workouts and invest in a resistance band because they're cheaper and more versatile than free weights. Good luck!

    Thanks guys!

I really appreciate all of the wonderful answers. I will be using Youtube, Nerd Fitness (what a cool site...thank you for introducing it to me!!), and a resistance band :D

ps: Sorry for the late response. It is very difficult for me to accept that if I want to work with my body type, toning is my best bet...I have to stop working against it.

you're welcome!! you should read this: http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/08/31/is-it-really-worth-it/ try reading that and still be unmotivated.

what is your body type? what are you so afraid of? and stop saying toning. it hurts my brain. say strength training. you want to get stronger.
