Went to the Dr today , pretty much told me my cholestrol is high just looking at my blood you could see it, really gross.
I was just wondering if anyone has ideas of lowering my cholestrol without medication for the time being ..
im such a picky eater and now im forced to broaden my horizon in the food dept .
Wednesday i found out my diabetes test results as well.. im 27 and starting to feel real unhealthy :(

Wow. I've seen blood before where the cholesterol was very high. Usually it is VERY high when you can tell just from looking at it. Does high cholesterol run in your family? Were you fasting? Did you pig out yesterday?

I'm sorry you got bad results.
This is just one idea but I would look into fish oil supplements. Has been said to lower chol.

Stop eating cholesterol and saturated fat. Read Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr.

    Good luck to you!

as far as my mothers side no .. my fathers side dont really know much about them .. i deal with a lot of things that none of my sisters have that would normally run in the family ... no fasting, and no pig out yesterday either .

By fasting, I mean, did you eat 8-10 hours BEFORE the blood test?

Do you have the numbers for both your HDL(good cholesterol) and LDL(bad cholesterol)? If your HDL is low, best way to increase it is to exercise. If your LDL is high while your HDL is normal to high, you should stay away from saturated fat and consume more polyunsaturated fat for your daily fat intake, namely omega fatty acids. Fish, walnuts, olive oil, peanuts are all high in polyunsaturated fats. Needless to say, you may also want to limit your cholesterol intake from food, even though dietary cholesterol is not completely absorbed by the body.

I have high cholesterol, too. Dr prescribed 1000mg of fish oil capsules twice a day. 30 minutes of exercise, lose weight, eating oatmeal (steel cut) for breakfast, leaner cuts of meat, etc. should also help. It isn't fun, but I can't bring myself to go on meds without trying everything else first.
  • I have high cholesterol as well, it runs on both sides of my family.

My doctor wanted to put me on medication right away, and mine was 2 numbers higher than the norm. But I declined, so she told me a low sugar low fat diet, with very little sodium & cholesterol. Also exercise daily.

If you didn't fast and the sample looked cloudy, it was almost certainly from triglycerides carried by chylomicrons. You hadn't yet cleared your most recent meal. It's normal for non-fasting plasma to be cloudy and it interferes with a lot of different kinds of lab work, which is why people are asked to fast. Cholesterol can be astronomically high - orders of magnitude above normal - without clouding the plasma.

A diet rich in whole grains and vegetables (and thus lower in fat, especially saturated fat) has been linked to lower cholesterol levels. Cheerios or oatmeal for breakfast is a great start (with SKIM milk). 100% whole wheat bread with lean meat and a bit of cheese, mustard no mayo (or no mustard either if you prefer) can be a good lunch. So can a salad as long as it is almost all vegetables, no ham or crutons, etc. For dinner, 1/2 your meal should be vegetables, with the rest lean protein, whole-grain for the starches (ie brown rice), and maybe a LITTLE bit of regular starch. Add fruits in for snacks, and a bit of low fat dairy, and you're on the right track.

Start tracking fiber, with the goal of it being in the RED every day. Also track fat and cholesterol or saturated fat. Sodium is another big culprit! (This is more that MFP can track, you'll need to pick which are the most important).

Also add in exercise. Cardio is going to be important in lowering your cholesterol, but don't neglect resistance. As you get your boy moving more and into better shape, your cholesterol levels should turn around.
