Get this off my chest

I am wondering if I have to shave my chest (and start tanning). I was flipping channels and saw an add for Insanity. The guys in the Before picture are pale and have chest hair. The After pictures are tan and smooth. It seems like all the fitness ads are this way. So, if I want to be all hunky I need to shave my chest, start tanning, and oil up.

Of course, I am being silly. But I am curious how many guys shave their chest and why.

You didn't have to shave your chest during the MFP initiation? That's weird.
  • I think they do it so that the muscles are more defined and you can actually see the muscles (not hidden behind a bunch of hair). It personally doesn't matter to me either way!

No, I ran like Brave Sir Robin (Monty Python ref) unlike the time I got my head shaved during High School initiation.

dont like the chest shaved! my husband is a firefighter and they have to shave the spots where they put his cardiac pads every year when he has his physical and stress test...i always hate the way that feels when it rubs against me when it is growning in!!!

Jeez, now I'm curious as to what women prefer.

I know that they shave their chest and tan because it accentuates the contours of their muscles. Why don't you just go for the "DJ Paulie D" look from Jersey Shore?

Waxing, last longer and a lot smoother. Not a fam of chest hair.

Shaving body hair has been a practice for bodybuilders especially during competition. However, I know a few swimmers who swear by shaving before events. Some even claim the lack of hair helps for a better glide under water. Shaving can also accentuate muscle definition that may be hidden by excess hair especially in the core region.

Yikes! Looking at the hair on my chest and thinking about waxing. That seems more painful than getting "I Heart Mommy" tattooed across my back.

And that said here come all the women that wax on a regular basis to call you a baby and to tell you to strap on a pair. lol

Yep, this. If you're going to get rid of the hair, wax it so it's smooth.

    Most def! Manly feature ;)
  • There are 3 things that go into that, in my opinion. 1) Like previously stated by someone else, it allows you to fully see the results of the person. 2) It depends on you feel about your chest hair, for other people (women) it's a preference that changes from person to person and if you meet someone who bases whether they'll be with you or not on the amount of chest hair you have, it's probably a good sign to walk away ;) 3) Back in the "ol'" days, chest hair used to be a sign of manliness. It was sexy, but now I do notice more of a push for a hairless chest in the limelight. It's always changing, so it really comes back to how you feel about it and if waxing/shaving is really worth it to you. Oh, and when it comes to tanning, my advice would be not to waste time on that (or money). I think everyone should be comfortable with their own skin-tone.

I like hairy chests as well, but a tan always looks nice. :)

I have a personal goal to get my body to the point where it is worthy of waxing. Don’t know if I would keep it waxed, but I would give it a try, hopefully by summer 2012.

I'm not a fan of the pelt. But, I wouldn't tell someone to get rid of the hair for me. A little doesn't bother me. Tom Selleck 70s chest hair doesn't work for me.

I DESPISE a shaved/waxed chest -- especially when it starts growing back. It is only acceptable for a swim meet or lifting competition. I think that men who do it regularly are way too into their looks, and it is creepy. Chest hair is on men -- hairless chests make me think of gym monkeys and boys.

i hate that girls are expected to shave, i wouldn't if it wasn't the norm so i don't understand why guys do it lol

and when it comes to tanning...well i just think that is stupid... asking for skin cancer

let me elaborate, i dont care if a guy naturally has no hair or has chest hair... just keep it natural... however, if it is A LOT a little trimming doesn't hurt lol
