Tell her that if she gets a gastric band she also need sto book herself into councelling sessions. Fact is, a gastric band doesn;t change the way you see and use food. You need proper guidance and still have to change your lifestyle. If this doesn;t happen, the band will bring nothing. There might be a weightloss in the beginning, but it comes back on. And there's a risk. It freaks me when I hear people say they are too lazy to get exervcising and then sauy they will do it once they are thin. BS, if you are too lazy to do it when you are fat, why would you change just because you lost a couple of pounds?
Don;t get me wrong, in extreme cases I do understand the need. But 230lbs? Seriously?
edited because I forgot: Give yourself a pat on the shoulder, way to go... you've proven that with determination, one can get to the point of change! Very well done!0 -
I had the bypass in 2006 and I had the same kind of attitude your friend has and I'm ashamed to say that I've gained back the 110lbs I lost plus an additional 50lbs putting me at 335lbs. Thankfully I have had my "aha" moment and know that this has to be a life style change for the rest of my life. The bypass is ONLY a tool and if she doesn't use it like it's intended than she will be just like me and put it all back on.0

I was 306.2 lbs last December and I'm 5'3". Gastric Bypasss has never even entered my mind. It's not a magic cure, even once it's done you can only eat very small meals and you have to work out. I have known 2 people who got gastric bypass done. The one is dead after a long painful battle with surgery related complications (she was in her 30's) and the other weighs almost 400lbs after getting down under 200lbs-it's not a magic cure. I'm down to 249 and I work hard every day for every ounce I lose and that's the only way anyone is every going to have permanent weight loss.0

Let her know that if she is not wiling to go to the gym now the bypass will not give her any motivation to go workout after and you can and will gain all the weight back if you do not work at it as its not a quick and easy fix, its a change and you have to work at it. If your gonna put up the money for that you should prob try it on your own first and save the pain, recovery and most of all money. My actual starting weight was at 280pds before I joined MFP at 256 I am almost to Onderland and all this was lost just by getting out and walking,no gym,no videos,no running just good ole hitting the pavement and eating well. I hope everything goes well for her even if she does go thru with it,sometimes you cannot change someone who does not want to be helped. My mom had the bypass and she lost a lot of weight in the first year but gained it all back and sadly passed away from medical complications.0
